which is part of a larger project called PRESTO (PREcipitation STructures
over Orography) which is funded by the Natural Environment Research
Council.
Further details of the studentship can be found at:
http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/pg-research/further_particulars_PhD_PRESTO.pdf
or by emailing the lead supervisor: Dr Suzanne Gray s.l.gray@reading.ac.uk

Applicants should have, or expect to soon obtain, at least an upper second
class degree in physics, mathematics or closely related physical or
environmental science. Candidates with a lower class of degree, but a good
performance at Masters level in a relevant subject will also be considered.
No prior knowledge of meteorology is required.
This studentship is fully funded (including a maintenance grant of about

Pay grade: 6

We need a talented Researcher to undertake research for a project
called 'Sting jet windstorms in current and future climates' funded
by the AXA Research Fund.
You will perform analysis of weather and climate forecasts of
extratropical cyclones to characterise the predictability, generating
mechanisms, and climatologies of mesoscale jets called sting jets
within them and so infer the risk posed by sting jets in both the
current and future climates.
You will have:
* (or shortly expect to obtain) a PhD in Atmospheric Science or
a closely related subject (e.g. in Physics or Mathematics)
* the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in
writing, and to manage your own time effectively

complex atmospheric models, and analyse the output
* team working skills to enable you to collaborate effectively
with the other researchers in our project
* ideally specific knowledge of atmospheric dynamics and physics
* ideally experience using FORTRAN and IDL and/or MATLAB
