Title: Planetary scale waves and gravity waves in the tropical Stratosphere
A 1-2 year post doc position is available at LMD/IPSL to work on the
stratospheric dynamics in the equatorial regions. The candidate will
analyse the stratospheric dynamics simulated by the Atmospheric General
Circulation Model (AGCM), by giving a particular emphasis to the
parameterization of the gravity waves in the model, and to their
interaction with the planetary scale equatorial waves. In relation with
the UK met-office and M?t?o-France the candidate will compare the
performance of various parameterizations of the subgrid scale waves,
that is a multiwave stochastic parametrization developed at and the
globally spectral parameterization used at the UK Met-Office. During the
course of his work, the candidate will try to improve the realism of the
simulation of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in the model, he will for
instance relate the intensity of gravity waves parameterized to the
convection. This known source of gravity waves activity in the tropics
is in fact loosely related to the gravity waves schemes in the present
day models.
As a possible extension, or according to the candidate motivations, the
work can rather consist in assessing the Gravity Waves parameterizations
against in-situ balloon flight measurements and meso-scale model
simulations.
This position is funded by the EU-FP7 project EMBRACE (Grant agreement
number 282672).
The Official dead line for the applications is the 1rst Sept. 2012, but
the applications will be examined as soon as they are received and if
adequate, the position will then be closed. To apply send a detailed CV
including a list of publications, a motivation letter plus the name and
e-mail of two referees.

Applications are invited for a
Postdoc Position in Polar Predictability
at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Traditionally, most of the skill of seasonal and decadal predictions has been thought to reside in the tropics and the North Atlantic Ocean, respectively. Recently, there has been an emerging body of evidence, however, that polar processes might be another, yet largely untapped source of predictive skill on seasonal to multi-decadal time scales. The successful applicant will be exploring polar predictability on time scales from seasonal to decadal. Research will focus on
identifying polar processes that provide predictive skill,
determining instabilities of the polar climate system, and
representing the structure of observational and model error.
The scientist will be responsible for modifying and running a global coupled climate model consisting of the atmosphere model ECHAM6 and the finite element sea-ice ocean model FESOM. Furthermore, the successful applicant will contribute to running numerical experiments on supercomputers, securing computing resources, analyzing the results, participate in scientific conferences and publish in peer reviewed journals.
Length of contract: three years, with the possibility of extension. Payment will be in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag f?r den ?ffentlichen Dienst (Tv?D 13).
For further information: Prof. Dr. Thomas Jung (E-Mail: thomas.jung@awi.de; Phone: +49 (0) 471-4831-1761)
AWI aims to increase the number of women in the scientific staff and therefore encourages women to apply.
Disabled applicants with identical technical and personal suitability will be preferentially selected, please see our notification on our homepage under job offers / jobs.
The AWI supports balanced work-life career development via a variety of alternatives. In Bremerhaven, the AWI operates its own nursery. Additionally AWI offers a suite of training courses to improve soft skills.
Applications including CV and degree certificates should be submitted by 29th June 2012 under reference number 48/G/KL to: Alfred-Wegener-Institut f?r Polar- und Meeresforschung, Personalabteilung (human resources), Postfach 12 01 61, 27515 Bremerhaven / Germany (http://www.awi.de) or via email as one PDF file to: Petra.Breyer@awi.de.
