Dear Colleagues,

I am looking for an outstanding post-doc, a mathematician with interest in fluid dynamics, control, and numerical methods, who would be happy to work here at Imperial College on a difficult, novel, and somewhat risky project. Someone familiar with sum-of-squares-of-polynomials would be ideal.

The announcement is attached. Could you please distribute it to suitable audience?

Best regards Sergei

invites applications to the open position of a PhD student, in the area
of evaluation and handling model uncertainties.

Dept. of Earth Sciences - Institute of Meteorology
PhD Position (part time - 50%)
Current funding is available for three years (01.09.2012 ? 31.08.2015)
Salary according to the german civil service E13 TV-L (~1500 Euro pre-tax)

MiKlip (<www.fona-miklip.de/>) is a major program funded by BMBF for
conducting research on decadal climate prediction. Different modules on
initial conditions/initialisation (A), processes and modelling (B),
regionalisation (C), synthesis (D) and validation (E) cooperate in
developing a model system for forecasting the near future of both
natural variability and anthropogenic climate change. The following
position is open at Freie Universit?t Berlin:

Job description:
As part of MiKlip module D, an integrated data and application system
for standardised evaluation of model simulations will be developed. This
work means applying and optimising the evaluation system. The focus will
be on the exploration and documentation of uncertainties related to the
choice of different observation based evaluation datasets, the
assessment of the robustness of the employed metrics used for
standardised evaluation and the improved representation of the
uncertainties for selected probabilistic forecast products. The position
is suited for preparing a PhD thesis.

Conditions of Employment:
Master or equivalent in the field of natural or engineering sciences,
mathematics or computer sciences.

Required:
+ Experience in the evaluation of global and regional climate models +
Experience in the field of ensemble forecasting, seasonal to decadal
prediction
+ Good knowledge of statistical methods in climate modelling
+ Ability to conduct scientific work independently as well as to work in a
team and the willingness to travel
+ Computing skills: Web based communication tools, Linux, experience with
programming languages (e.g. Fortran, C/C++), statistical software &

Implications on the Terrestrial Middle Atmosphere? funded by the Swiss
National Science Foundation. The main goal of this project is to study
the response of the middle atmosphere to the short-term variability of
the solar irradiance. The PhD student will apply a state-of-the-art
Climate-Chemistry Model to simulate the ozone and temperature
variability in the middle atmosphere, analyze the results and compare
them with observations.

The applicant should have a Master or Diploma degree in physics,
mathematics, environmental, earth sciences or engineering and deep
interest in the modeling of physical or chemical processes in the
atmosphere at all scales or some experience in numerical climate and
chemistry modeling. Good knowledge of mathematical fundamentals,
FORTRAN-95 and IDL visualization package will be essential.Fluency in
English will be a great advantage.

This 3-year position should be filled until October 2012.Applications
including CV, statement of interest and contact information for two
potential referees should be sent to Dr. Eugene Rozanov. For informal
