A funded PhD studentship is available at Newcastle University, with co-supervision (and additional CASE funding, training opportunities and computing facilities) from the Met Office, Exeter:
'Developing the next generation of coupled land surface-hydrological models'
Accurate prediction and warning of the impacts of severe weather, including flooding, drought, storm surges etc, requires an integrated approach to forecasting. Of particular concern is the need to better simulate UK scale river flow and inundation. This project will focus on this by addressing a significant gap in modelling capabilities between the meteorological and hydrological research communities. The aim is to develop a fully coupled atmosphere-land-ocean hydrological cycle modelling system, in order to provide more realistic simulations of river flows and therefore discharge into the ocean.

Full funding is available to UK/EU students, with each award covering PhD tuition fees and living costs for a maximum of four years (these may be used to contribute towards costs for international students).

Early-stage postgraduate and late-stage undergraduate students are invited to apply for the
PRACE Summer of HPC 2016 programme, to be held in July & August 2016.
Consisting of a training week and two months on placement at top HPC centres around Europe,
the programme affords participants the opportunity to learn and share more about PRACE and HPC,
and includes accommodation, a stipend and travel to their HPC centre placement.
Applications open 13 January 2016.
*About the PRACE Summer of HPC*
The PRACE Summer of HPC is a PRACE outreach and training programme that offers summer
placements at top HPC centres across Europe to late-stage undergraduates and early-stage
postgraduate students. Up to twenty top applicants from across Europe will be selected
to participate. Participants will spend two monthsworking on projects related to PRACE
technical or industrial work and produce a report and a visualisation or video of their results.
/PRACE SoHPC 2015 Participants and Trainers at Training Week in
Barcelona, Spain/
The programme will run from 4 July to 31 August 2016, with a kick-off training week at
Juelich Supercomputing Centre attended by all participants. Flights, accommodation and
a stipend will be provided to all successful applicants. Two prizes will be awarded to the
participants who produce the best project and best embody the outreach spirit of the programme.
