The Center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for Integrative
Modeling of the Earth System (CLIMES) has an exciting opportunity for a
postdoctoral researcher to help jump-start an innovative project to develop
multiscale models of the atmosphere for the next generation of
local-to-global climate projections. The primary goal is to produce better
models of critical climate processes from cloud-system to global scales
through improved physical and computational implementations. The
researcher would join a rapidly expanding team at LBNL conducting
innovative research in abrupt and extreme climate change, ice-sheet
simulation, carbon and methane cycle measurement and modeling, integrated
assessment, and advanced numerical methods for climate dynamics. The
postdoc will develop and apply atmospheric models with unprecedented
telescoping capabilities to simulate the multiscale dynamics of the
tropical ocean-atmosphere system. The individual will work closely with
climate scientists, computer scientists, and applied mathematicians at LBNL
and other DOE National Laboratories as part of a multi-institutional
collaboration supported by DOE?s climate research and Scientific Discovery
through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program. The selected candidate will
report to the principal investigator of this SciDAC project who also heads
LBNL?s Climate Sciences Department, the Carbon and Climate Program, and
CLIMES.

Experienced Researcher Position - Modelling palaeo-methane concentrations

Limit of Tenure Applies*

Deadline for Applications: 6th June 2012
Job Reference Number: LC16411

One 17-month Marie-Curie Experienced Researcher (ER) post within the Marie-Curie Initial Training Network GREENCYCLESII (www.greencycles.org<http://www.greencycles.org/>) is to be filled at the University of Cambridge, Departments of Geography and Chemistry. The post available is T5.7 - Modelling palaeo-methane concentrations. This project will utilise two detailed land surface models (HYBRID and LPX-Bern, working with Dr Friend in Geography) and a comprehensive model of global atmospheric chemistry (UKCA, working with Prof. Pyle in Chemistry) to simulate emissions of methane (and other important trace gases for atmospheric oxidative capacity such as isoprene) during the last interglacial (LIG). Comparisons will also be made between simulated methane concentrations and ice core measurements. Anticipated outputs include significantly improved understanding of controls on methane concentrations during the LIG, and/or recommendations for future model development. The successful candidate has the opportunity to develop key modelling and data interpretation skills, using state-of-the-art terrestrial physics, ecology, chemistry, and climate models.

To be eligible for this position you must fulfill the Marie Curie requirements for Experienced Researchers, viz: on appointment you must (i) have a PhD degree or (ii) have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience, after obtaining the degree which formally allowed you to embark on a doctorate. In both cases, you must be within the first five years of your research career. UK applicants must have been resident outside the UK for three of the four years prior to appointment. Non-UK applicants must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the three years prior to appointment. More details about eligibility criteria see: http://www.greencycles.org/vacancies/criteria/

The start date should ideally be July 2012 but no later than August 2012. Salary (subject to country-specific cost of living adjustment): Euro 53,000/year (*) plus mobility, travel and career allowances for more details see: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/.

(*) Salary rate is a gross contribution. Net salary will result from deducting all compulsory social security contributions as well as direct taxes.

* Limit of tenure: 17 months.

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN AIRBORNE MEASUREMENT OF ARCTIC METHANE EMISSIONS - MANCHESTER

This role represents an exciting opportunity to join the Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of Manchester to work on an international project to assess climatically important sources, concentrations and environmental impacts of methane and other greenhouse gases in the Arctic (and global) environment as part of an integrated international field campaign and modelling study.

You will work alongside other project partners to assist in flying aircraft measurement missions using the FAAM aircraft (www.faam.ac.uk) during field campaigns within the Arctic Circle. You will use and tailor recently developed retrieval tools to derive and validate greenhouse gas concentrations from thermal infrared spectra measured by an aircraft FTIR; in conjunction with other aircraft, surface and satellite instrumentation. You will collaborate to use the measurement dataset to characterise Arctic airmasses in terms of local emissions and wider airmass history and to feed this knowledge into atmospheric modelling work.

You must hold or be about to obtain a PhD, or equivalent, in a relevant subject, with specialist knowledge in the area of atmospheric science. You must possess experience in programming and analysis using data handling software (e.g. IDL, MatLab), together with excellent communication and team working skills. Due to the nature of some of the research field work, some travel will be required on an aircraft to the arctic circle.

Please see https://www.jobtrain.co.uk/universityofmanchesterInternal/CandidatesAA/Preview.aspx?clientid=73&attachmentid=4562 for further info. Informal enquiries to contact Dr Grant Allen for informal enquiries (grant.allen@manchester.ac.uk<mailto:grant.allen@manchester.ac.uk>)
