Research Fellow in Cloud and Climate Uncertainty Modelling

University of Leeds, School of Earth and Environment
Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science

Fixed term for 2 years

This post is part of a UK consortium funded by the Natural Environment Research Council to reduce the uncertainty in estimates of radiative forcing and climate feedbacks relating to aerosol and cloud processes. The Leeds contribution to the project will be to use new applications of uncertainty modelling to quantify the key uncertainties in cloud microphysical processes and climate effects. You will run cloud-resolving models and global climate models simulating the interaction of aerosols and clouds. New approaches using statistical emulators will be used to understand how uncertainties in numerous cloud processes impact the cloud properties of relevance to climate. You will closely collaborate with other project scientists carrying out laboratory and modelling studies.

The ACID-PRUF consortium involves nine UK universities (Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Exeter, York, Leicester, Hertfordshire, Cambridge and Oxford) and the Met Office and brings together laboratory studies and modelling of clouds and climate processes on all scales. Other scientists involved in the project at Leeds are Prof Alan Blyth, Dr Steven Dobbie and Dr Ben Murray.

You will have a PhD and expertise either in a relevant area of atmospheric modelling or in uncertainty quantification in complex models. You will be able to demonstrate commitment to publication of original results at an international level.

University Grade 7 (?30,122 - 35,938 p.a.)

Informal enquiries may be made to Prof Ken Carslaw, tel +44 (0)113 343 1597, email k.s.carslaw@leeds.ac.uk<mailto:k.s.carslaw@leeds.ac.uk>

Closing Date: 1 September 2012

Summary of Job Description

? Application of cloud-resolving and global models to simulate the interaction of aerosols with clouds and quantify the radiative forcing
? The design of ensembles of model experiments to enable the uncertainty in cloud radiative properties and its sources to be quantified
? Application of statistical techniques to quantify the uncertainty in cloud radiative properties based on model results
? Collaboration with project partners to help define model experiments and interpret the results and their relevance to the project?s aims
? Publication of the results in high quality, peer reviewed journals or other appropriate outlets and presentation of results at national and international meetings

Aerosol and Cloud Research at Leeds

ICAS has an extensive programme of research in global aerosol and aerosol-climate modelling, led by Prof Ken Carslaw (www.see.leeds.ac.uk/aerosol<http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/aerosol>). The group has developed the Global Model of Aerosol Processes (GLOMAP) and the aerosol module of the UK climate model (UKCA, http://www.ukca.ac.uk). The group currently has five postdoctoral researchers and six students working on a wide range of aerosol-climate problems, including aerosol nucleation, global CCN, cloud microphysics, and volcanic aerosol, etc. Two projects are applying statistical techniques to quantify the uncertainty in these complex aerosol models.

Environmental Sciences Department Chair
Brookhaven National Laboratory

A Chairperson for the Environmental Sciences Department at Brookhaven
National Laboratory (BNL) is sought to lead the continued development of
internationally competitive programs in climate, environmental science
and technology. The Department consists of a diverse group of 58
scientists, technicians and information technology professionals with a
yearly operating budget of approximately $18M (<www.bnl.gov/envsci>).

The successful candidate will be committed to foster work in
cross-disciplinary teams on scientific challenges appropriately
addressed in a national laboratory setting. In addition to maintaining
their own active research program, they will be expected to:

* Provide intellectual and managerial leadership for the staff in the
Environmental Sciences Department. Work with the staff to recruit,
mentor and develop staff members, and to maintain an interactive
environment supportive of creative scientific research.
* Develop a scientific vision for the Department appropriate for a
leading national laboratory, and actively participate in accomplishing
this vision. The goal is to develop premier atmospheric (e.g., aerosol
and cloud), environmental, and terrestrial ecosystem science research
programs consistent with the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE).
This should involve building a strategic business plan that leverages
the unique multi-disciplinary capabilities and facilities at BNL, and
builds upon current BNL environmental science and technology
capabilities to address new challenges.
* Build strategic partnerships inside and outside BNL that significantly
enhance the responsiveness, competitiveness, productivity and impact of
the department R&D efforts, resulting in a sustainable growth in the
level and scope of department funding.

Qualified candidates are required to have:
* A doctorate degree in atmospheric, environmental or ecological
sciences, or related disciplines;
* A recognized record of scientific accomplishment, and an active
research and development effort in one or more of the following areas:
terrestrial ecosystem science, aerosol and cloud properties and their
effects on climate, and/or climate model development particularly
involving the improved representation of atmospheric and/or carbon cycle
processes that are relevant to DOE missions in Energy and Environment;
* Proven capabilities in scientific and managerial leadership with
management, communication, and decision-making skills;
* Familiarity with one or more of the following DOE programs: the
Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program (<http://www.arm.gov/>),
the Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program
(<http://asr.science.energy.gov/>), the Climate Modeling Program
(<http://climatemodeling.science.energy.gov/>), and/or the Terrestrial
Ecosystem Science Program (<http://tes.science.energy.gov/>).

Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience working with other federal
and non-federal agencies that support environmental science and
technology R&D is highly desirable.

The potential for a joint appointment with Stony Brook University can be
explored for interested candidates.

A complete description of the position is available at the job
application site. To be considered for this position, apply online at
<www.bnl.gov> and click Jobs, then click Search Job List and apply to
job #16167, listed under Management.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply prior to 10 September 2012.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer
committed to building and maintaining a diverse workforce.

Postdoctoral Research Associate Opportunities: College of Earth, Ocean,
and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University,

CEOAS invites applications for two Institutional Postdoctoral Research
Associate positions. One position will focus on the human dimension of
the Earth System and Geographical Sciences. The other will address
physical, chemical, biological, and/or geological aspects of the Earth
System. CEOAS puts high value on emerging research areas that transcend
traditional discipline boundaries, and on the ability of researchers to
work in collaborative teams. Awards are competitive, with a major
emphasis on potential for independent grant-funded research.

Positions are F/T, 12-mo, fixed-term; renewal is at the discretion of
the Dean. If renewed, the university-funded FTE would be 0.75 in year
two and 0.5 in year three. FTE may be increased with external funding
generated by the appointee.

Each postdoc will be paired with appropriate faculty mentors for
training in the development and submission of fundable research
proposals, research collaboration, and publication of results. CEOAS
Institutional postdocs will be encouraged to seek external funding, and
may serve as PI or co-PI on grant proposals. Following the training
period, opportunity may exist, based on mutual agreement of the College,
the candidate, and in accordance with university procedures, to change
the position to a research or tenure-track status.

Requires completed Ph.D. degree in general area of Earth System Sciences
or related field prior to appointment. We encourage applicants to
contact CEOAS faculty members with research interests fitting the
proposed work. For additional information, see
