We have a senior technician post for someone to help design/calibrate and install lightning strike sensors in a tropical forest (the install is akin to dendrometers) in Nigeria and Cameroon. This is part of a project to estimate the number of trees killed by lightning in the tropics. The closing date is the 4th of Feb. If you have anyone interested I would be hugely grateful if you pass this on, especially if you know of environmentally minded engineers.

Best wishes, Tim Hill

This is an exciting opportunity for an environmental modelling research position, working on a cross-disciplinary research project investigating the support offered by cloud computing for the execution of potentially complex environmental models.

As you build and design your model simulations, you will be helping your computer science colleagues to make complex environmental models available for anyone, through the project's cloud computing goals (grant abstract here<http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N027736/1>)

For such a position, this is an unrivalled opportunity to have the freedom to conceive and run your own environmental science modelling experiments.

You do not need to be an expert in cloud computing or with a particular interest in the computer/code aspects of environmental science - just some experience of building and running model experiments on modern computers (e.g. HPC).

The project is in an area of huge significance, with environmental modelling being the key tool to evaluate uncertainty, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies around flood/drought, food security and the impact of climate change. You would be joining part of a growing team looking at advances in digital technology and its impact on understanding and managing the natural environment (with external funding of £3.35m). You would also be part of the Lancaster Environment Centre<http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/lec/research/> and Lancaster University's new Data Science Institute<http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/dsi/>, benefiting from a cutting edge, interdisciplinary research environment.

Our partners include people in charge of developing CESM<http://www2.cesm.ucar.edu/> and UKESM<http://www.jwcrp.org.uk/research-activity/ukesm.asp>, providing an opportunity to influence the next generation of world-class Earth System Models, as well as key players involved in flood risk assessment modelling.

Requirements: A PhD or equivalent degree in environmental science/computer science or a closely-related field. You will have a track record of high-quality publications in areas of relevance to the project and the willingness to undertake ambitious and challenging research.

Closing date: 10 February 2017

Salary range: £26,829 to £38,183

Contact: Dr Paul Young<mailto:paul.j.young@lancaster.ac.uk> (Lancaster Environment Centre) or Prof Gordon Blair<mailto:g.blair@lancaster.ac.uk> (School of Computing and Communications)

Apply here: http://bit.ly/2j0pZpc

We encourage applications from members of all diversity groups, and from all areas of environmental modelling.
