A postdoctoral research fellow is sought for a collaborative project between
the University of Michigan and NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
Laboratory (GFDL). The successful applicant will examine the roles of
forcing versus intrinsic dynamics in the low-frequency variability
of high-resolution coupled ocean-atmosphere simulations run at GFDL. The
project will utilize new tools developed in the frequency spectra domain,
along with other tools, to address these questions. The project
represents
an opportunity for an early-career scientist to analyze cutting edge high
resolution models run on the nation's largest supercomputers.

National Science Foundation funding is available for up to three years
of support, depending on the performance of the successful applicant.
The successful applicant will join an ocean modeling research group,
currently
consisting of one postdoctoral research fellow, five graduate students, and
three
undergraduate students, at the University of Michigan. Entrainment of
undergraduates into postdoctoral research is strongly encouraged and will
provide invaluable mentoring experience for positions sought afterwards.
The successful applicant will be expected to visit with GFDL collaborator
Dr. Stephen Griffies as needed to advance the project.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in physical oceanography or
atmospheric science, or a related field such as computer science, applied
mathematics, physics, or fluid dynamics. Prior numerical modeling
experience
is highly desirable. Applicants should send a statement of interest,
curriculum
vitae including a list of publications and presentations, and
contact information
for three references to Professor Brian Arbic (arbic@umich.edu). Inquiries
to
this email address are also welcomed. Applications will be considered
until
the position is filled, but applications submitted before July 7, 2014 will
be
given full consideration. The University of Michigan offers competitive
salary
and benefits packages for postdoctoral research fellows. The University of
Michigan
is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
