Two (2) Post-doc positions in lightning meteorology, lightning nowcasting
and forecasting, at the National Observatory of Athens, Greece
Supervisor: Dr Kostas Lagouvardos (Institute for Environmental Research,
National Observatory of Athens, NOA)
Project: TALOS
Application deadline: 14 May 2014
Among the primary objectives of this project (TALOS: Thunder and Lightning
Observing System) is:
(a) To develop an operational tool for nowcasting/very short-term
forecasting of lightning activity over Greece based on lightning data. This
tool will provide real-time information on the lightning activity over
Greece, while application of a lightning-tracking algorithm will allow
providing very short-term forecasting (1-2 hours) of thunderstorm
propagation.
(b) To develop operational tool for forecasting lightning activity
over Greece for the next 48 hours, based on parameters forecasted by WRF
model, in operational use at NOA.
(c) To work on the methodology, implementation and validation of a
lightning assimilation technique applied to weather models with the aim to
improve the quantitative precipitation forecasts.
This project is funded by the Greek General Secretariat for Research and
Technology and it has duration of 17 months. The two positions offer
contracts of 14 month duration (44280 Euros each), starting in June 1st
2014, at NOA's premises in the northern suburbs of Athens, Greece.
Candidates should hold a PhD in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology or a
related field and preferably in the fields of numerical weather prediction
and lightning. Very good knowledge of English is required, as well as
expertise in working with Fortran and/or C in Linux/Unix environment.
Interested candidates should send their Curriculum Vitae and a
recommendation letter by 14 May 2014 to Dr Kostas Lagouvardos
