PhD position in Paleoclimatological Data Assimilation
The group of Climatology of the Institute of Geography, University of
Bern, is offering a PhD position in the area of paleoclimatological data
assimilation. The successful candidate will further develop Kalman
filter based numerical techniques for reconstructing climate over the
past 400 years by combining early instrumental data, documentary data
and tree-rings proxies with an ensemble of climate model simulations.
The task involves the transfer of existing methods from meteorology to
the paleoclimatological context and developing creative new ideas how to
gain most information from sparse and time-averaged data input data.
The candidate should have a strong basis in environmental physics and
mathematics (MSc in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Physics, or
similar), experience in handling large, gridded geophysical data sets
(specifically climate model output or reanalyses) and skills in data
processing (Fortran, etc.) and statistics (R or similar). Good English
language skills are a prerequisite.
The successful candidate will participate in the PhD program of the
Graduate School Climate Sciences, University of Bern, Switzerland
(<http://www.oeschger.unibe.ch>).
The position is for 36 months, the earliest starting date is 1 Apr 2016.

Applications are invited for an Assistant Research Scientist (i.e., a
postdoctoral scholar) now available in the Ecosystem Studies Group at
the UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) in Solomons, Maryland
(http://www.umces.edu/cbl). This position will focus on developing and
implementing numerical models to support the understanding of estuarine
biogeochemical processes, including nutrient cycling, oxygen depletion,
and phytoplankton dynamics, as they respond to changes in external
inputs of freshwater, nutrients, and organic matter. This effort will
include the development of a model for carbonate chemistry to quantify
the interactions of fossil acidification and eutrophication in
Chesapeake Bay. We seek highly motivated applicants with demonstrated
problem-solving and quantitative skills.
This position will include participation in multiple large,
inter-disciplinary projects aimed at understanding the interactions of
multiple external drivers in driving short- and long-term changes in
estuarine biogeochemistry.Specifically, the successful applicant will
enhance an existing hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model in Chesapeake Bay.
Experience with FORTRAN and Matlab programming is essential and strong
writing and communication skills are recommended.//

The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM), located in Hamburg, Germany, offers fellowships to outstanding students interested in climate research. This special call for application is focusing exclusively on students with interest in atmospheric and/or oceanic processes in the Earth system; a selection of doctoral research topics is offered on:

This special call is aiming at students holding a Master's degree (with written thesis) in physics, geophysical sciences (incl. meteorology), chemistry, mathematics, computer science, or engineering.
IMPRS-ESM doctoral candidates contribute to the understanding of the Earth system through the application, evaluation and development of a spectrum of Earth system models at different levels of complexity and at various spatial and temporal scales. Emphasizing the physical system, the School encompasses the broader field of Earth sciences, including economics and social sciences. The IMPRS-ESM strives to attract a diversity of talented men and women from all nationalities to research in the Earth system sciences.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally recognized reputation in climate modelling. The MPI-M, in cooperation with partners throughout Germany, is leading an initiative on High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for Climate Prediction, HD(CP)². (see hdpc2.eu for more information). Starting in April 2016, HD(CP)² will go into its second phase of three years, with about fifty scientists working in institutes and universities across Germany.
For this phase, HD(CP)² has a few key targets: further develop the capacity of the ICON model to simulate climate processes at grid resolutions of hundreds of meters over large areas such as northwest Europe and on other local area domains around the world; continue to integrate data from observational sites around northwest Europe for the evaluation of these simulations; to develop techniques for using the results from these simulations to develop state-of-the-art parameterizations for use in conventional climate models – and thus improve our understanding of climate prediction.
The MPI-M has opened the following position:
HD(CP)² Project Coordinator
(m/f, Ref. MPIM-W019)
Responsibilities
· This individual will provide the day-to-day lead of the research program, and will work to support the HD(CP)² scientific steering committee in the coordination of the overall project.
· The project coordinator will organize project meetings and will be responsible for managing communication and reporting to the funding agency.
Qualifications / Experience
· A PhD in meteorology, oceanography, physics, or related fields is required for this position.
· Prerequisites for the position include excellent organizational and communication skills, fluency in written and spoken German and English.
· An interest in the management and coordination of large scientific projects, and a willingness to travel to meet with project partners throughout Germany, is also desired.
Employment conditions
· The position is offered up to the expected project end on 31 March 2019. Successful candidates are expected to start before summer 2016.
· Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
· The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
