Defence Outcomes Scientist/Foundation Scientist
?21,250 - ?29,100 per annum depending on skills & experience + benefits
Based in Exeter
Full-time
Weather and other environmental factors can have a critical impact on the success of military operations. By understanding and interpreting environmental impacts, we provide relevant and timely advice direct to military decision-makers. Our world-leading range of tools and systems are also used by allied countries and coalition partners.
The role
Our Defence Outcomes team works to achieve an advantage for UK, ally and coalition armed forces through the intelligence exploitation of environment information. We provide both consultancy and tools to deliver impact advice utilising Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) in a way that?s meaningful to the soldier, pilot or other decision-maker. In short, you?ll deliver a superb end-to-end meteorological service to UK, US and NATO forces, from initial research to the interpretation of data to the end user.
You?ll provide ? and further improve the quality of ? scientific advice to defence customers by applying scientific research to Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) impact products and consultancy services. The work?s fantastically varied and mission-critical: you?ll work on several different projects for a variety of different customers which, depending on your skills, may include developing risk-based advice for defence customers or surface temperature models for various man-made objects. As well as researching and evaluating work to underpin the future development of NWP capability and impact products, you?ll advise on, guide and support users of our products.
In return, we?ll help you to further develop your scientific know-how and apply it in exciting new ways. As well as the opportunity to attend workshops, conferences and scientific trials, we?ll encourage you to publish research work in peer-reviewed journals.
The person
You?ll need to be degree educated (or equivalent) in a mathematics, physical science or related subject. For the Science-level role, we?d also like you to have a PhD or an equivalent level of professional experience. Military experience would, of course, be an advantage, though not essential. As well as being fluent in one or more high-level computing language for data analysis, you?ve the ability to apply high-quality scientific analysis and mathematical skills to any research problem. Intellectually agile and practically versatile, you?re more than capable of working on a number of different projects at the one time. You?ve a collaborative work approach too, and you?re quick to build strong working relationships with colleagues, customers and stakeholders. It?s also important that you?re a clear, credible communicator, able to explain technical matters to non-technical colleagues and customers.
Because of the nature of the work, you?ll need to be security cleared. You?ll also need to be a UK national or national of an EU country or Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the United States of America.
About the Met Office
Beyond weather. That's the best way to describe our work here at the Met Office. With some 1,800 people across 60 sites around the globe, we provide world-leading weather and climate services in the UK and overseas. Today, our products and services meet the needs of many different customers - from the general public, government and schools, through broadcasters and new media, to civil aviation and businesses in every sector imaginable. Everything we do, every area of our work, has a real impact on people?s lives and lifestyles.
The rewards
Along with a competitive salary, you can look forward to a bonus scheme, Civil Service pension, 25 days? holiday, enhanced maternity and adoption leave, plus excellent learning and development opportunities.
Apply
To find out more, and to apply online, please visit: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/jobs/current-vacancies/002553 Closing date: 29 October 2012.
Please note that we have one position available. Depending on experience, you?ll be recruited at one of two levels ? Scientist or Foundation Scientist.
