forecasting; 2) new data driven methods to capture intermittency and
extreme events in large data sets; 3) new Physics constrained nonlinear
regression models and information barriers to prediction; 4) new reduced
order models for tropical/extra-tropical interaction and short term
climate change.

Interested applicants should have a Ph.D in applied mathematics,

5-year Postdoc Position (m/f) (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany)
code no. 2012/KS 10

Regional storms and their marine impacts

The Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geestacht in
Geesthacht, near
Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a Postdoc Position (m/f)
starting at December
1st, 2012 and ending at October 31st, 2017 for the project ?Regional
storms and their marine
impacts?. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow,
near Berlin, conducts
materials and coastal research. You can find more information at
http://www.hzg.de.

This project is part of the Cluster of Excellence ?Integrated Climate
System Analysis and
Prediction? (CliSAP). The main objectives are the characterization of
regional storm (polar
lows, typhoons, extra tropical cyclones and medicanes) statistics, the
determination of the
relationship to driving conditions and of the storms? impacts. Therefore
high-resolution
global climate model simulations will be analysed for storms in
different geographical
regions. This will be done both for the last decades and for future
climate scenario
simulations.

This project is collaboration between the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht,
the University of
Hamburg, the German Weather Forecast Service, and the
Max-Planck-Institute for
Meteorology. The position is located at the Helmholtz-Zentrum
Geesthacht, Germany.

Required qualifications are:
- PhD (or be about to complete) in meteorology/atmospheric physics or in
a related scientific
field (e.g., geophysics or Earth system science)
- strong interest in storms and atmospheric dynamics
- experience in a higher programming language
- ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
- experience with atmospheric climate models
- good knowledge of statistics and data analysis
- strong motivation, also to publish results in peer-reviewed journals

We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual
public sector social
benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum
Geesthacht goes without
saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of
women in the science
sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be
considered preferentially
within the framework of legal requirements.

Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2012/KS 10 to
Max-Planck-
Stra?e 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or to the e-mail-address:
personal@hzg.de.
(as single pdf-file including CV and copies of master/diploma university
certificates, names
of two references, a record of publications, and certificates proving
your language skills).

Closing date for applications is November 20th, 2012.

Research Fellow in global aerosol and ice nuclei modelling

Fixed term for 36 months

You will pursue a modelling research project, commencing early in 2013, using a global aerosol-climate model (GLOMAP and UKCA) under the supervision of Professor Ken Carslaw and Dr Ben Murray. The project has two main components, both making use of GLOMAP. The first is to model the distribution of aerosol from marine sources in the Arctic as part of the NERC funded ACCACIA consortium (Aerosol-Cloud Coupling and Climate Interaction in the Arctic). In the second part you will estimate the global distribution of various ice nuclei types as part of a European Research Council project designed to improve our understanding of ice nucleation in the atmosphere.

With a PhD (or an expectation of achieving a PhD shortly) in a relevant area you will have proven skills in numerical modelling in Fortran and data visualisation software. Experience of developing and running complex numerical models and demonstrable commitment to publication of original results at an international level is essential to this role.

Further information about the aerosol modelling group at Leeds can be found at http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/aerosol and about Dr Murray?s research at http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/BJM/.
