The German Meteorological Service (DWD) provides weather and climate services to the general public, to governmental institutions, to the scientific community, and to private and commercial users. The central climate bureau (department of climate and environment consultancy), to which the open post is assigned, is, amongst other duties, concerned with issues surrounding climate modeling.
The central climate bureau of the German Meteorological Service (DWD) in Frankfurt/Offenbach (Germany) is looking, for the EU research project EUPORIAS, fixed-term from 01.05.2013 for a period of 38 months, a
Research Scientist
Reference code 20120094_9334
The German Meteorological Service together with more than 20 other partners from NMHSs, universities, agencies and companies from a couple of European countries cooperates in the EU-funded project EUPORIAS. The aim of this project is the development of seasonal to decadal forecasts of climate impact on different economic sectors (energy and water policy, health, transport, agriculture, tourism) as well as the analysis of the vulnerability of economic sectors to climate change and the development of proper climate services for the end-user.
The successful applicant will contribute to the development of a regional seasonal forecast system for East Africa. Together with contributions of other international partners these forecasts will be combined to a large ensemble to enhance the reliability of the forecasts. A close cooperation with the ?World Food Programme? is arranged since the food production is very vulnerable to extreme weather events in this region and an early identification of such an event allows taking adaptation measures reducing the impact early in advance.
The job description includes the following activities:
? Development of a regional seasonal forecast system for East Africa for the use in the early warning system for droughts of the World Food Programme
? Contribution to the scientific development of COSMO-CLM hindcast ensembles based on anomaly-initialized seasonal EC-Earth hindcasts
? Contribution to the scientific development of regional seasonal forecast using the appropriate error statistics
? Analysis of the quality and variability of the EUPORIAS multi model ensemble forecasts; comparison to the results of the global forecasts (added value) and of the statistical downscaling techniques
? Providing scientific publications as well as presentations of results for public boards and international professional audience
Necessary requirements for the candidates are:
? Scientific degree (master or diploma) preferably in meteorology or related subjects
? English language skills (equivalent to Level B2 CEFR)
Further essential experiences:
? Knowledge in the procedures and algorithms of regional numerical climate models
? Knowledge and experience in handling complex numerical climate models
? Knowledge in theoretical meteorology
? Knowledge and experience in the evaluation of ensemble forecasts
? Knowledge and experience in programming languages used for numerical modeling (FORTRAN 90/95, Perl, UNIX-ksh)
? Knowledge in visualization software (GrADS, IDL, etc.)
? Knowledge and experience in the presentation and publication of research results
? Basic knowledge in Geographic information system (GIS)
? Knowledge in operation systems of high performance computers and workstations as well as MS Office software
? personal initiative, performance and commitment
? confident capability of oral and written expression
? good planning and organizational skills together with a high degree of elaborateness
? capability for analytical and joined-up thinking
? compliance and willingness to acquire new skills
? ability to work under pressure
? ability to work in a team.

The research and development department of the German Meteorological Service (DWD) at Frankfurt/Offenbach is looking for a
Research Scientist
Referenzcode der Ausschreibung 20120190_9334
starting on 1. April 2013 to be filled as a temporary position until 30.09.2015 within the HD(CP)2 project.
The HD(CP)2 project (high definition clouds and precipitation for climate prediction) aims to improve precipitation forecasts and to reduce uncertainty in climate simulations. The entire project comprises in total about 50 positions within Germany for two periods of three years each. The focus of the project is the development and evaluation of a large-eddy-model (LEM) version of the ICON model. High-resolution (~100m) model runs on a regional scale over a decade will then be used as a reference for the development of cloud and precipitation parameterisations in the global ICON climate model.
The S5 part of HD(CP)2 done by this and a second position focuses on ?model uncertainty for partially resolved clouds and precipitation?. This work will benefit from ICON-LEM simulations to be used to determine uncertainties in the ICON model used at climate resolutions. These uncertainty estimates will then also be used in an ensemble forecast framework.
The job description includes the following activities:
* Setup of ICON as an idealized regional model at resolutions of 2-20km
* Comparison of ICON and LEM simulations, run on the same setup
* Development of diagnostics on clouds and precipitation
* Extension of ICON-vs-LEM comparisons to complex realistic conditions
* Documentation of procedures and results, including presentation at internal and external meetings and in scientific journals
Necessary requirements for the candidates are:
* Scientific studies with a master degree or diploma, preferably in meteorology, mathematics or physics
* Confident knowledge of English (Level B2 CEFR) in written and oral form
* Basic knowledge of German (Level A2 CEFR) in written and oral form
Further essential experiences:
* Solid knowledge in the field of general meteorology
* Knowledge in the field of meteorological research and development
* Knowledge in ensemble methods in numerical weather prediction
* Knowledge in the parameterization of physical processes
* Knowledge in stochastic physics
* Knowledge and experiences in analysis and visualization of complex and extensive datasets
* Knowledge and experiences with programming languages, e.g. FORTRAN or C, and UNIX
* Practical experiences with large-eddy models
* Practical experiences with weather and climate models
* Ability to think and act conceptually and target-oriented
* Motivation and initiative
* Skills in communication and cooperation (nationally and internationally)
* Creativity and ability to innovate
* Quick perception and motivation to learn
* Skills in the presentation of scientific results (orally and written)
* Ability to transfer complex theoretical approaches into practical methods
Experience in international collaboration is advantageous.
