Research fellow (PhD postion) in paleoclimatology/paleoceanography
A 3-year research fellow position in paleoclimatology is available at Uni Climate. Uni Climate is a department of Uni Research AS and partner of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), a collaboration between Uni Research, University of Bergen, Institute of Marine Research and the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to conduct research as part of a PhD study aimed at determining Pliocene temperature, stratification, ocean circulation and ventilation in the eastern Nordic Seas. The study will include the use of a range of paleoclimate proxie. The main focus for the successful candidate will be on analysis and interpretations of biomarker (organic geochemistry) data, however, analysing and interpreting results of stable isotopes (oxygen and carbon), Mg/Ca and foraminifera are also relevant. The successful candidate will be part of the OCCP (Ocean Controls on high-latitude Climate sensitivity - a Pliocene case study) project. OCCP addresses the role of the Nordic Seas in determining climate conditions at high Northern latitudes during the Pliocene, a period globally warmer than present, through a fully integrated multi-proxy and model study. The successful candidate will be encouraged to interact cross disciplines during the course of the study.
Applicants must have achieved a master's degree or equivalent in paleoclimatology, paleoceanography, marine geology, marine geochemistry or related fields, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before an appointment can be made.
Experience with organic geochemical analysis of sediments is desirable but not essential (full training and support will be given). The successful candidate would also benefit from experience with trace element or stable isotope geochemistry, knowledge of foraminifera, as well as experience with multi proxy studies. The candidate will work in a lively research environment and should have good team working skills. Good communication and writing skills in English and a desire to engage in international collaborative research is essential. As part of the position the candidate will have a longer research stay at Durham University, UK.
Salary is decided by agreement. Uni Research AS has employee pension and insurance agreement.
For further information about the position please contact researcher Bj?rg Risebrobakken, e-mail: bjorg.risebrobakken@uni.no, phone: +47 55584321. For more information about Uni Research and BCCR, please refer to http://uni.no and http://www.bjerknes.uib.no.
The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time.
Send electronic application, CV, certificates and diplomas/transcripts (bachelor and master's degree) and a list of scientific publications by clicking on the button marked "APPLY FOR THIS JOB" on this page:
http://www.jobbnorge.no/job.aspx?jobid=90262
The application should also contain a statement of research interests including specific motivation for the position, and the names and contact details of at least two references. Applications sent by e-mail will not be considered.
Closing date for applications: 1 March 2013

A number of post-doctoral fellowships and post-graduate research bursaries
in climate change are available at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Climate change is a cross-university strategic priority area, with
expertise situated over twenty departments and research centres, and
coordinated by the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI ?
www.acdi.uct.ac.za). Areas of particular strength at UCT include (i)
physical climate science, (ii) vulnerability, impacts and adaptation, and

atmospheric climate science, climate scenarios and climate services. The
Energy Research Centre (ERC - www.erc.uct.ac.za) is a multi-disciplinary
centre, housed in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment,
which focuses on Energy Efficiency, Energy & Climate Change, and Energy
Poverty & Development. Other centres and departments working on climate
change can found listed at www.acdi.uct.ac.za.
Specific topics for these fellowships and bursaries are listed below.
1. Regional Climate Change and Variability in Africa
2. Climate Services/Information for Climate Adaptation, Risk Management
and Policy
3. Climate Change Adaptation, with a focus on ecosystem-based and
community-based adaptation approaches
4. Emerging Climate Risk, Thresholds and Agriculture in Africa
5. Climate Change and Bio-Economy

Open position for a 2-year post-doctoral position in ocean-atmosphere modelling and analysis at LOCEAN-IPSL (Pierre and Marie Curie Paris University, France).
The successful candidate will work at LOCEAN-IPSL in the tropical climate variability team for a project started in February 2012. She/He will join a group of physical oceanographers, climate modellers and engineers to participate in a multi-year project funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR).
This project focuses on new pathways toward a better representation of the multi-scale physics that drive climate variability. We are targeting to identify and quantify the key upscaling mechanisms taking place in coastal upwelling areas (mainly the southeastern Pacific and the Arabian Sea), which hold the climate models strongest biases in the Tropics. Our approach aims at building a modeling platform for multi-scale ocean-atmosphere coupled simulations, by introducing embedded high?resolution oceanic and atmospheric zooms in key regions of a global climate model. This new tool is designed to explore the impact of the highest spatial resolution not yet approachable by the current climate models and investigate the role of selected upscaling processes.
The successful candidate must show an interest in atmospheric sciences, air-sea interaction or tropical climate variability. She/He will analyse and participate to the scientific valorisation of the different simulations realised within the project (ocean-atmosphere stand alone or coupled simulations at different resolutions). the exact planning of the work is open for discussion but the candidate should, among other tasks, focus on the impact of upscaling mechanisms on phenomenon occurring in the Indian Ocean at times scale ranging from intraseasonal to interannual (MJO/ISO, Monsoon, IOD?).
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or in a related field, such as climate sciences. Previous experience with atmospheric or climate models or multivariate statistical climate data analysis tools are highly desirable. Programming skills to manipulate and analyze large data sets is also highly appreciated. Knowledge of the WRF regional atmospheric model is a plus.
Interested applicants should email a curriculum vita and names and contact information for two references to Sebastien Masson: smasson at locean-ipsl.upmc.fr
