PhD opportunities in Climate System Science
Deadline February 15th for international applicants.
Deadline April 15th for domestic applicants (Australian and New Zealand citizens, plus Australian permanent residents).
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science is Australia's premier university led initiative comprising 5 Universities, CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology and multiple internationally outstanding research organisations.
The Centre has a series of PhD scholarships available. Successful candidates can expect to collaborate with partners in the Centre of Excellence in Australia and overseas. Expressions of interest in any area of Centre-focus are encouraged. Details of possible supervisors, and their areas of expertise, are available at <www.climatescience.org.au/content/postgraduate-and-honours-projects>.
Although scholarships are available to study any aspects of physical climate sciences, targeted scholarships are also available in the following areas:
1. Terrestrial processes, and particularly on how crops can be parameterized in regional or global climate models. Based at the University of New South Wales.
2. The impacts of urbanisation on local climates and the parameterization of urban surfaces in regional climate models. Based at the University of New South Wales.
3. Understanding the duration asymmetries observed between El Nino and La Nina events and seasonal synchronisation of these events. Based at the University of New South Wales. <http://myweb.science.unsw.edu.au/~shaynemcgregor/index.html>
4. Comparison of climate model simulations with Australian palaeoclimate data covering the last 1000 years. Based at the University of Melbourne. <http://climatehistory.com.au> and <http://joellegergis.com>
Successful applicants will have an outstanding undergraduate record, with a first class honours (or equivalent) or a Masters degree. It is most likely that they will be strong in quantitative sciences.
Applicants should send full academic transcripts, a short CV and an expression of interest to Dr Melissa Hart (<melissa.hart@unsw.edu.au>).
Applicants that find topics or supervisors of interest at <www.climatescience.org.au> are welcome to contact Dr Hart for advice, or contact other researchers directly.

Lecturer in Climate Physics and Earth Observation
The Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Department of Physics
Salary: ?44,150 - ?49,200 per annum
South Kensington Campus
This is a permanent appointment at Lecturer Level, based in the Department of Physics and co-sponsored by the Grantham Institute for Climate Change for an initial 5-year period.
As a further development in the College's work in Climate Physics and Earth Observation, the goal of this post is to use Earth Observation to improve fundamental scientific understanding of key processes and to support improved modeling of both the climate system and the wide array of potential impacts of a changing climate. Other possible areas of Earth Observation interest are the establishment of global monitoring and management systems in a variety of areas, such as emissions verification, monitoring of forest carbon stocks and flood and drought risk management systems.
The successful candidate would be expected to identify opportunities in environmental change. In particular, he or she will develop linkages with the Department of Life Sciences and the Grantham Institute, and will be involved in the European-sponsored Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) in Climate. The post is central to the Grantham Institute?s programme of research and will strengthen and expand that within the Department of Physics. The post-holder would be responsible for his/her research programme, for appropriate administrative tasks, and for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
A good honours degree and a PhD in a relevant subject area, or equivalent level of professional qualification and experience, is essential. Candidates must have a growing international reputation for research and innovation in Climate Physics and Earth Observation, underpinned by proven evidence of independent original research activity and high quality published work in international peer-reviewed journals. Candidates are expected to demonstrate significant research potential, and the potential to raise significant external research funding required from UK and EU sources, in order to maintain and enhance the College's leading research activities in Climate Physics and Earth Observation. Awareness and understanding of the key issues in the area of Climate Physics and Earth Observation, as well as research interests in climate change policy are also essential. Previous experience of teaching Physics at undergraduate and postgraduate level would be beneficial. The postholder must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to convey ideas and concepts clearly and effectively to a range of audiences through a variety of methods and media.
For further information visit http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/employment and enter ?Earth Observation? or Reference Number NS2012272SC as the ?keyword? on the Job Search page.
Informal enquiries should be addressed to Prof. Steve Schwartz, Head of Space and Atmospheric Physics (s.schwartz@imperial.ac.uk) or Prof. Sir Brian Hoskins, Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change (b.hoskins@imperial.ac.uk).
Application queries should be addressed to Louise Hayward (l.hayward@imperial.ac.uk).
Closing date: 11 March 2013
