PhD studentship in clouds and climate at University of Toulouse

Supervisor: Dr Jean-Pierre Chaboureau (Laboratoire d'A?rologie,
University of Toulouse and CNRS)

Application deadline: 28 February 2014

The primary objective of this project is to investigate the complex
chain of interaction between aerosols and clouds, one of the largest
uncertainties in our understanding of climate and man-made climate
change. This uncertainty depends not only on our incomplete knowledge on
emission and nucleation processes, but also on the interaction between
microphysical and dynamical processes with many impacts and nonlinear
feedbacks. Mesoscale models now allow to perform Large Eddy Simulations
(LES) on large areas where processes from cloud to regional scales are
explicitly represented. The current capacity conjugated to develop new
generation microphysical schemes will lead to significantly advance our
understanding of the aerosol cloud interaction. This project will
combine high-resolution aerosol-cloud modelling with detailed
representations of aerosol and cloud microphysical processes performed
with the Meso-NH model (http://mesonh.aero.obs-mip.fr) with extensive
analysis of data from a field campaign. One emphasis of this work will
be the representation of rain processes in current models and their
sensitivity to resolution and parameterization.

This project is funded by Dynamics-aerosol-chemistry-cloud interactions
in West Africa (DACCIWA), an European Union collaborative project aiming
to quantify key processes and feedbacks controlling aerosol cloud
interactions, which is part of the European Union research cluster
"Aerosols and Climate" (http://www.aerosols-climate.org/). DACCIWA will
improve our scientific understanding of interactions between emissions,
clouds, radiation, precipitation and regional circulations in southern
West Africa. DACCIWA will conduct a major field campaign planned for
June 2015 to collect high-quality observations involving three European
research aircraft and a wide range of surface-based instrumentation at
two supersites in Ghana and Benin. This project opportunities to
experience collaborative research in a consortium of 15 leading
international partners from France, Germany, Ghana, Nigeria, Switzerland
and United Kingdom.

Candidates should hold or expect to gain a master's degree in Physics,
Atmospheric Science, Meteorology or a related field and preferably
experience in atmospheric sciences and scientific modelling. Interested
candidates should send their Curriculum Vitae and a letter of motivation
by 28 February 2014 to Dr Jean-Pierre Chaboureau
(jean-pierre.chaboureau@aero.obs-mip.fr)

The Public Engagement Programme Manager is an important role within the Society. It reflects the Society desire to conduct an active programme of engagement and communication activities that deliver significant public benefit by making available high quality information on weather and climate, fostering popular interest in the weather and promoting the important role that meteorology has in people?s lives.
