Within the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) funded project "Palaeo-constraints on Monsoon evolution and dynamics" (PACMEDY-MPI), the department for The Ocean in the Earth System (Director's research group), we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f; MPIM-W026)

to work on Earth system model simulations investigating past and future monsoon variability. The project PACMEDY-MPI is part of an international consortium within the Belmont Forum/JPI-Climate initiative on climate services collaborative research action on climate predictability and inter-regional linkages.

Responsibilities

The objective of this position is to conduct and analyze simulations of the climate evolution during the Holocene with a focus on monsoon systems.

The researcher recruited for this position will:

· Carry out transient and time-slice simulations for the mid-to-late Holocene using the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model MPI-ESM1.

He/she will contribute to collaborative work packages on

· High-latitude tropical tele-connections.

· Monsoon variability on interannual to multi-decadal time scales.

· Global and local characteristics of individual monsoon systems.

· Assessment of emerging constraints on monsoon systems in the future.

· Contribute to project and sub-task coordination.

· Disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.

He/she will be part of an international research team based at universities and research centers throughout Europe with partners in India and South America. He/she is expected to attend training, coordination, and dissemination activities that are organized by PACMEDY.

· Good knowledge in climate dynamics, in particular monsoon systems and atmosphere/ocean interactions and tele-connections.

· Experience in modelling geophysical fluids, preferably in modelling the coupled atmosphere-ocean
system, and skill in climate model evaluations.

· Programming skills in Fortran and statistical post-processing and visualization software (e.g.
FERRET, NCL, MATLAB), as well as experience in handling large data sets.

· Ability to coordinate cross-institutional research work and reporting tasks.

Selection criteria

The selection criteria will value the qualifications, and the experience of the candidates with respect to the text above.

Employment conditions

· The position is offered for 3 years, starting in September 2016.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is an internationally renowned center for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. The MPI-M provides a vibrant international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. The institute is located in the heart of one of Europe's most livable cities, and is embedded in an environment known worldwide for its breadth of climate research.

The project PalMod is a project between MPI-M and several other German research institutes and universities, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF), to understand climate system dynamics and variability during the last glacial cycle. Within the research group Ocean Biogeochemistry in the department The Ocean in the Earth System of the MPI-M and as part of the project PalMod, we are looking for a
Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f, Ref. MPIM-W027)
in the area of ocean biogeochemical modeling. The work will focus on understanding how marine biogeochemical processes controlled the ocean carbon sink and thereby the atmospheric CO2 during the last deglaciation. The successful applicant will work on adjusting the global biogeochemistry model HAMOCC for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). She/he will perform transient model simulations with HAMOCC in the framework of the Max Planck Institute's Earth System Model (MPI-ESM) starting in the LGM to the present. This research will make a major contribution to the MPI-M's ongoing model development efforts aimed at improved representation of carbon and nutrient sequestration in the ocean. It is also essential for the PalMod's activities focusing on the role and mechanisms of the feedbacks between the carbon cycle and climate during glacial times.

Responsibilities

· Refine existing model components and incorporate new ones into the ocean biogeochemistry model HAMOCC for the LGM conditions.

· Develop and perform simulations with HAMOCC in the framework of the MPI-ESM.

· Contribute to project coordination.

· Disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.

Qualifications / Experience

· A PhD in oceanography, geoscience, environmental sciences, or a related field is required for this position.

· Compelling understanding of ocean biogeochemical dynamics, in particular regarding its role in Earth's climate.

· Experience with ocean carbon cycle models, skill in model development.

· Strong programming skills in Fortran, post-processing and visualization software (e.g., NCL, CDO), as well as experience in handling large data sets.

· Strong communication and organizational skills and an ability to effectively communicate results of scientific research to project members and international colleagues.

Employment conditions

· The position is offered until 31 August 2019, with a starting date between October 2016 and January 2017.

· Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

· The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.

Selection criteria

Candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications and ability to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined for this project.
