The Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR)
has a work contract vacancy as an Assistant Researcher for an
oceanographer, climatologist, environmentalist, or related fields
to characterise the Iberian North-Atlantic hydrodynamics
integrating satellite remote sensing and in-situ data in numerical
modelling and to develop a regional hydrodynamic model to study ocean
species distribution patterns, considering various (climate, upwelling)
scenarios.
This work contract will be integrated in the framework of the "MarInfo -
Integrated Platform for Marine Data Acquisition and Analysis" project
Closing date is 1 of August 2016.

*Available immediately: Two PhD positions at the
Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU, Munich) within the Transregional
Collaborative Research Center "Waves to Weather"
1.
"Representing forecast uncertainty using stochastic physical
parameterizations" **
**(Supervisor: Prof. George Craig, Project A6) **
*
Severe weather events such as thunderstorms often develop from triggers
that are too small to observe or model in numerical weather prediction
systems. The purpose of this project is to develop methods to represent
these triggers stochastically in the high resolution forecast model
COSMO of the German Weather Service, and to evaluate their potential for
improving probabilistic weather forecasts.
*2.
"Assessment of model errors in warm conveyor belts and their impact on
downstream dynamics" **
**(Supervisors: Dr. Martin Weissmann, Dr. Andreas Schäfler, Project A3) **
*
Diabatic processes in warm conveyor belts and their insufficient
representation in numerical models are seen as a major source of
forecast errors. For this reason a major field campaign with multiple
aircraft will be conducted in autumn 2016 (www.pa.op.dlr.de/nawdex/).
The campaign is expected to provide unique measurements in these
important regions that will be assimilated in operational numerical
weather forecasting models. The PhD project shall investigate the
influence of such observations on the weather evolution downstream
through parallel data assimilation and forecasting experiments with the
new global model ICON of Deutscher Wetterdienst and potentially another
global modelling system.
The positions are 0.75 part-time at the salary grade E 13 TV-L, and
time-limited according to the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (WissZeitVG).
The W2W consortium strives to promote equal opportunities and intends to
increase diversity and the proportion of women in research. In
particular, handicapped applicants will be given preference in case of
equal suitability.
Applications will be considered *immediately* until both positions are
filled.
If you would like to apply, please send the following components to
audine.laurian@lmu.de:
- CV
- letter of motivation and research interests
- copies of master and bachelor certificates including a transcript of
records
- contact information of two referees for letters of recommendation
For further information, please visit http://wavestoweather.de/ or
contact Dr. Audine Laurian (audine.laurian@lmu.de).
