Postdoctoral fellowship in computational statistics, researching sea
level variations (vacancy ref. ACAD102130)

Bristol Glaciology Centre and Department of Maths

University of Bristol

This post is part of a European Research Council grant including four
other positions, which together, tackle the challenge of assessing and
predicting sea level rise. A better understanding of sea level rise is
crucial in the context of climate change, as millions of people live in
parts of the world that are threatened by future coastal flooding.

This post will be responsible for the statistical framework that
combines a wide range of data sets, including both ground-based and
satellite, into sea level rise assessments. Applicants need to be
familiar with modern practice in large-scale spatial statistics
including Gaussian Markov Random Fields. Applicants will also need good
computational skills, since the inference will likely require sparse
matrix calculations, and the use of multiple-core machines.

This post is a unique opportunity for an early career statistician to
develop theory and practice at the cutting edge of modern Statistics,
and to contribute to a complex but crucial scientific question

Funding for the post is up to 48 months.

Informal enquires are welcome. Contacts: Professor Jonathan Bamber

There are 2 NCEO posts being advertised at present, one for a Research Associate at King's College London, and one for a Scientific Programmer at Reading (a PDRA position to develop further and support use of the EMPIRE data-assimilation system):

Details are on NCEO's website: https://www.nceo.ac.uk/about-us/opportunities-2/

Research Associate, King's College London, Geography

Reference: THW/16/059639/000913

Salary Details: £32,600 per annum

Allowances: £2,323 London Allowance

Contract Type: Temporary/Fixed term

Contract Term: Full time

Based at the Strand Campus this post is based within the research team of Professor Martin Wooster and focused on the study of biomass burning and their emissions to the atmosphere. Whilst based at King's, the appointee will also be affiliated the NERC National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).

The post holder will work on development, use and exploitation of satellite data, alongside other environmental datasets. They will study particular biomass burning episodes, most likely those exacerbated by the recent (and currently ongoing) El Nino event, and will exploit new fire radiative power (FRP) measurements now provided by geostationary and polar orbiting spacecraft. Some improvement of algorithms required to turn the 'raw' satellite thermal observations into information on active fires maybe required.

Applicants should have strong experience of working with satellite data/ products and be able to code in Python and/or IDL. Experience of working with a combination of datasets to investigate particular environmental phenomena will be a significant advantage, in order to develop definitive records of particular biomass burning episodes.

This is a full time post offered on a fixed-term contract for 11 months. Full details of Research Associate post at KCL<https://www.hirewire.co.uk/HE/1061247/MS_JobDetails.aspx?JobID=71594>.

The salary will be paid at Grade 6.31, £32,600 per annum, plus £2,323 per annum London Allowance.

Closing date: 21 August 2016

—-

Scientific Programmer, NCEO University of Reading

Reference: SF12022

Salary Details: £28,982-£37,768 per annum

Contract Type: Temporary/Fixed term

Contract Term: The post is full time until the end of May 2018 initially with the possibility of entering a 4-year rolling contract.

The post will be funded by the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and will maintain the EMPIRE data-assimilation software system. Data assimilation is the science of combining large numerical models of a system with observations of that system in a statistically sound way, exploring Bayes Theorem. The software system consists of an efficient implementation of several state-of-the-art ensemble data-assimilation methods, like Ensemble Kalman Filters and Particle Filters. It allows for extremely efficient coupling with any numerical geoscience model via MPI. The system needs to be developed further, including more data-assimilation methods like efficient particle filters and variational methods based on ensemble covariances, automatic covariance generation tools, etc. The post is also expected to be actively involved in the generation of new nonlinear more efficient data-assimilation methods. Furthermore, the usefulness and possibilities of a merger with the German PDAF system is to be investigated. An important aspect of the post will be support for present and future users of the system.

Closing date: 11th August 2016
