An-Najah National University (Nablus) and the KIT Institute of
Meteorology and Climate Research (Garmisch-Partenkirchen) are looking
for a candidate to fill a three-year Postdoc position at An-Najah
University. Working place is Nablus. The position is embedded in the
DFG-funded trilateral project "Integrating Microwave Link Data For
Analysis of Precipitation in Complex Terrain: Theoretical Aspects and
Hydrometeorological Applications (IMAP)", with partners from Germany
(KIT, TU München, DWD), Palestine (An-Najah University) and Israel (Tel
Aviv University, Jerusalem College of Technology, Kinneret Limnological
Laboratory, Israel Hydrological Service). After a successful first phase
of two years, the DFG approved now the second phase with a duration of
three years.

The objective of IMAP is to develop and apply new methods for the
quantification of precipitation in regions of complex terrain and
thereby improve streamflow modeling and forecasts. We use data from
commercial MW-link networks and develop new methods for the derivation
of rainfall and humidity information, as well as methods to do spatial
reconstruction of the line-integrated information that MW-links provide.
To account for the complex runoff processes in our target regions, we
apply and improve the fully coupled model system WRF-Hydro, which is
then also used for streamflow forecasting.

The main work tasks for the Postdoc are:

· Receive training on WRF-Hydro by KIT experts in Germany

· Validate current WRF-Hydro setup for the Wadi Faria (East of Nablus)

· Extend WRF-Hydro with channel loss and overbank flow parametrization

· Validate new parametrization implementations

· Carry out performance analysis for different rainfall products
(MW-links, weather radar, dense gauge network) for Wadi Faria

To be successful the potential Postdoc should have:

· A PhD in environmental or natural sciences, engineering or computer
science

· Very good programming skills, preferably (but not necessarily) in
FORTRAN 90

· Good knowledge of UNIX/Linux systems

· Publication record in atmospheric or hydrological sciences

· Good communication skills in English

· Willingness to work in a trilateral project with German, Palestinian
and Israeli scientists

Description:
The Hydrological Sciences Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
(GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD, is recruiting a Research Associate in the
framework of the NASA-SERVIR project WALFEHE (A West Africa LDAS for
Forecasting Extreme Hydrological Events).

In this project, we propose to partner with the SERVIR-West Africa hub
AGRHYMET to provide an improved land data assimilation system for
integrated water management with a focus on (1) better understanding the
interactions between the atmosphere and land surfaces, (2) improving
hydrometeorologic modeling to provide meteorological, hydrological, and
agricultural drought characterizations and forecasts, and (2) flood
modeling and forecasting.

The developments will be performed within the NASA Land Information
System (LIS) and will mostly focus on the improvement of model
parameters and physics representation, with especial attention to
particular hydroclimatic processes in West Africa. He/she will also
conduct land data assimilation research, exploring the optimal use of
terrestrial remote sensing data with land surface models. The main tasks
the candidate will assist with are:

* Initial implementation and evaluation of land surface models;
* Implementation and evaluation multivariate data assimilation, using
GRACE, satellite-based soil moisture and radar altimetry;
* NASA GEOS-5 data pre-processing (downscaling and bias-correction)
and forecast experiments using OL and DA.

Qualifications:

* The candidate should have advanced experience in land surface and
hydrological modeling, and model development. Experience with data
assimilation and working with satellite datasets are a plus.
* Proficiency with Fortran and Unix is required.
* It is desirable that the candidate has a PhD in engineering,
hydrology, atmospheric science, geophysics, or a related discipline.
* The individual will be expected to present results in peer- reviewed
publications and scientific presentations, and writing and reviewing
technical reports.
* Education: PhD

To Apply:

Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3
professional references and a cover letter explaining how your
qualifications meet the posted requirements to Andrew Negri
(<anegri@essic.umd.edu>).
