Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

French Speaking Climate Experts - Expert Deployment/ NORCAP
Norwegian Refugee Council

NORCAP seeks French Speaking Climate Experts to support our work to
strengthen climate services in West Africa

NORCAP is a world leading standby roster which consists of 700 highly
qualified women and men ready to deploy to international operations,
regional institutions and national authorities at short notice. In order
to rapidly respond to our partners' needs NORCAP is currently growing
its capacity within technical areas of relevance for Disaster Risk
Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), including within
meteorology and climate services communication.

Specific background

Effective climate services are vital to reducing vulnerability to
climate impacts. However, 70 of the most vulnerable and least developed
countries do not yet have access to usable and scientifically credible
climate information and forecasts. The Global Framework for Climate
Services (GFCS) aims at pooling the expertise and resources of a number
of organizations together through the development and incorporation of
science-based climate information into planning, policy and practice at
all levels tailored to user needs in five focus areas: Disaster Risk
Reduction (DRR), water management, agriculture/food security, health and
energy.

As a partner to the GFCS, NORCAP is seeking experienced Climate Service
Experts who are interested in a challenge out of the ordinary.

Purpose

To support lasting capacity in the development of user-specific,
actionable climate products and services at regional and/or national
levels in close collaboration with user sectors and research
organizations to ensure that climate products are linked to applications.

Job ID: 305757
Full/Part Time: Full-Time
Regular/Temporary: Temporary

Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is recruiting a postdoctoral scientist to conduct innovative research in climate modeling with a focus on the roles of light-absorbing particles in controls on melting of snow and ice. The selected candidate will work on quantifying the radiative impacts of light-absorbing particles and other forcings on the melting of snowpack and glaciers and the consequent effect on hydrological cycles using a regional model coupled with aerosol, radiation, land surface and snow components. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with a team of recognized scientists to use NASA remote sensing retrievals of snow, ice, aerosols, and soil properties to constrain the cutting-edge mesoscale modeling to improve our understanding of the controls on snow and ice melt in High Mountain Asia.

Equal Employment Opportunity
PNNL is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer that is committed to hiring a diverse, talented workforce. EOE Disability/Vet/M/F/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity. Staff at PNNL must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications
A Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, or related fields is required.

Candidates with
(1) experience in regional or global climate modeling of aerosol and/or snow processes,
(2) fluency in Fortran computer language, and
(3) experience with Linux/Unix computational environments and parallel programming paradigms on high-performance computers
are preferred.

Because visible scientific accomplishments are key to the success of our project team, the candidate must have demonstrated excellent communication and writing skills as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional conferences. Proactive and timely publication is an essential requirement. A cover letter describing the applicant's research experience and interests, and a curriculum vitae with a list of publications in refereed journals and contact information of three references is required.

Postdoc Position in Climate Modeling at the University of Toronto and the University of Victoria, Canada

This is to announce a postdoctoral research fellowship position on impacts of aerosol forcing on Northern Hemisphere climate. The project deals with aerosol forcing influence on Northern Hemisphere circulation, storm tracks, and snow/sea ice processes, with some focus on the Canadian sector. It is funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The position will be primarily located at the University of Toronto, Canada, and will be carried out in close collaboration with research scientists at ECCC's Centre for Climate Modeling and Analysis located at the University of Victoria, BC, Canada. Collaborative travel between the two institutions will take place (expenses for this travel are included in the project funding). The project includes analysis of the Canadian Earth System model CanESM and the CMIP archives, as well as original Earth System Model simulations designed for the project. The position is linked to ongoing collaborations between ECCC and several Canadian Universities through the Canadian Sea Ice and Snow Evolution Network (CanSISE.ca).

This is a two-year research project. The postdoctoral fellowship appointment will be for one year and renewable for a second year.

For further details, please email the project principal investigators Paul Kushner (paul.kushner@utoronto.ca) and John Fyfe (john.fyfe@canada.ca). Application deadline is October 18, 2016, although late applications will be considered.
