Climate Science

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) plan to make a series of hires in the area of climate, beginning with two positions at the assistant, associate (untenured) or full professor (tenured) level with an expected start date of July 1, 2017. We invite applications in the broad area of climate science, including the oceans, cryosphere, land, and atmosphere, as well as their interactions. Approaches involving observations, theory, experiments, and modeling using biology, chemistry, or physics are all welcome. We are especially interested in candidates that will expand and complement existing strengths in climate science within EPS and SEAS.
A doctorate or terminal degree in the broad area of climate science is required by the expected start date. We also seek candidates who have a commitment to teaching.

Required application documents include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, three representative publications, a statement of research and teaching interests, and contact information for 3-5 potential references. We will evaluate applications beginning November 15th, and will conclude when the positions are filled. EPS and SEAS value diversity among their faculty, and we are committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community. We particularly encourage applications from historically underrepresented groups, including women and minorities.
Please submit applications online at: http://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/7170
Further information about EPS and SEAS are available at http://www.eps.harvard.edu/ and http://www.seas.harvard.edu/. Address questions about the position to Professor Peter Huybers
(phuybers@fas.harvard.edu<mailto:phuybers@fas.harvard.edu>) or Professor Frank Keutsch (keutsch@seas.harvard.edu<mailto:keutsch@seas.harvard.edu>) and about the application process to Kathleen McCloskey (kmccloskey@fas.harvard.edu<mailto:kmccloskey@fas.harvard.edu>).

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
Faculty of Arts and Science
University of Toronto

JOB POSTING – POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW

Area of Research:
Measurements of atmospheric composition are crucial for assessing the
changes occurring in the Earth's atmosphere due to human activity.
Observations made from high-altitude balloon platforms provide insight
into the distribution of these trace gases with altitude as well as
concentration. The Canadian Atmospheric Laser Absorption Spectrometer
Experiment Test-bed (CALASET) project is developing a new measurement
capability for Canada by utilizing balloon-borne laser spectroscopy.

Description of duties:
The successful applicant will be part of a team developing a new payload
for in situ measurements of the atmosphere from a high-altitude balloon
platform. This payload will be used to measure profiles of trace gases.
Working with the CALASET team, the PDF will be responsible for the
development of an infrared laser absorption spectrometer including
contributions to the design, construction, testing and deployment
phases. The position is based in Toronto, Canada and will be jointly
supervised by Prof. Kaley Walker and Prof. Wolfgang Jaeger (Department
of Chemistry, University of Alberta). This position will involve travel
and extended field work. Also, the PDF will spend part of their time
working in Prof. Jaeger's group in Edmonton, Canada. The period and
timing to be negotiated between the supervisors and successful applicant.

Salary:
$45,000 per year.

Required qualifications:
A Ph.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry or a relevant field is required. We
seek a candidate with expertise in construction and/or operation of
field or laboratory instrumentation and programming with Python and
Linux. Experience with laser spectroscopy (including diode or QCL
technologies), scientific balloon measurements and/or atmospheric
monitoring would be very advantageous.

Application instructions
All individuals interested in this position must submit a CV, the names
and contact information for at least two referees, and a statement
summarizing their experience and how it is relevant to this position to
Prof. Kaley Walker (via email at kaley.walker@utoronto.ca) by the
closing date.

Closing date: 14 November 2016.

Supervisor: Prof. Kaley A. Walker (U. Toronto) / Prof. Wolfgang Jaeger
(U. Alberta).

Expected start date: 1 January 2017.

Term: Up to two years and three months.

FTE: 1.0

Employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto is
covered by the terms of the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement.

Job title: Post-doctoral research position on climate/air-quality
modelling at the urban scale

Location: LMD, Paris, France (http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr)

Duration: 24 months

Start date: January 15, 2017

Salary: Depending on the post-doctoral experience and based on the CNRS
rules around 2000 Euros (net)

*Paris, France*

A two-year post-doctoral position is available at the Laboratoire de
Météorologie Dynamique in Paris, France (http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr)
within the framework of the H2020 PULSE project (Participatory Urban
Living for Sustainable Environments). The PULSE project focuses on five
cities: New York, Paris, Singapore, Birmingham and Barcelona where a
large amount of health, air-quality, climate, demographical and activity
data will be collected and analysed with big-data methods. The ultimate
goal of the project is to develop a predictive model for the diagnosis
of type 2 diabetes and asthma. The collected data will stem from several
sources such as climate and air-quality simulations, surface and remote
sensors, satellites, air-drones as well as social networks and smart phones.

The post-doc position will focus on urban scale climate and air-quality
simulations over the cities of New York, US and Paris, France using the
WRF (http://www.wrf-model.org/index.php) and CHIMERE
(http://www.lmd.polytechnique.fr/chimere/) meteorological and
air-quality models respectively. In order to account for an envelope of
mid-21^st century climatic conditions, the candidate will develop
climate projections under an optimistic and a pessimistic greenhouse gas
emission scenario (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 respectively,
http://sedac.ipcc-data.org/ddc/ar5_scenario_process/RCPs.html). The
local air-quality simulations will be driven by city-scale emission
inventories (compiled with a bottom-up method). For Paris these
emissions are developed by the local environmental agency (AIRPARIF)
while for the NY city the candidate will be responsible for their
compilation using the SMOKE model (https://www.cmascenter.org/smoke/)
and available anthropogenic activity emission related data. Emission
projections will derive from the ECLIPSE global database developed by
IIASA
(http://www.iiasa.ac.at/web/home/research/researchPrograms/air/ECLIPSEv5a.html).

Candidates for this position are expected to hold a PhD in atmospheric
chemistry and/or physics or a related discipline. Previous experience in
climate and/or meteorological modeling such as WRF and chemistry
transport modeling will be especially appreciated. The working
environment will be linux so basic knowledge of bash script or other
shell language is expected as well as programming skills in Fortran and
familiarity with python matlab or R for post-processing analysis.Good
written and oral communication skills in English are necessary.

Candidates interested to apply for this job should contact Konstantinos
Markakis (konstantinos.markakis@lmd.polytechnique.fr) and Myrto Valari
(myrto.valari@lmd.polytechnique.fr).
