*Postdoc position*

*Impacts of changes in Amazon land surface on rainfall variability in South
Eastern South America*

A postdoc position is open to investigate effects of land-use change and
land degradation in Amazonia on rainfall variability in South Eastern South
America
(SESA) by applying moisture recycling networks and climate modeling.
Land-surface characteristics are strongly connected to climate circulation
pattern and climate variability. However, the integrity of tropical and
subtropical forests is under threat due to land-use and climate change,
because it also changes land surface characteristics.
To improve predictability of climate at annual and decadal time scales, it
is of great importance to better understand the role of land-use change on
biophysical characteristics of the land surface. Specifically, the Amazon
rainforest is connected to the continental water cycle, where moisture
recycling networks have been applied to identify source, intermediate and
sink regions of recycled precipitation. Particularly, Amazon forest loss
significantly reduces continental precipitation due to evapotranspiration
decline in particular during the dry season. This way, moisture recycling
networks may be used to complement climate models in analyzes
of atmospheric moisture transport and recycling based on observational or
simulated data in the region.

We are looking for a professional with doctorate degree and experience
on interactions between the terrestrial surface and the climate.
Previous experience on terrestrial surface modeling, use of dynamic
vegetation models coupled to climate models, computational programming in
Fortran 90 and analysis and visualization of scientific data in NCL or
GrADS packages will be preferred.

*Stipend:* The opportunity is open to citizens of all nationalities, with
an academic title of doctor obtained less than 7 years ago. The selected
candidate will receive a postdoc grant from FAPESP with a monthly stipend
of BRL 6,819.30 for 12 months, renewable for another 12 months, and an
additional equivalent to 15% of the annual budget to be used in items
directly related to research activities.
More information on FAPESP standards: http://www.fapesp.br/en/5427

*Requirements:*
- PhD in Earth System Sciences or Environmental Sciences, Applied Computing
or related disciplines.
- Expertise in terrestrial surface modeling / sensitivity analyzes of
environmental conditions in surface-to-atmosphere interactions or
experience in atmospheric modeling / studies of aspects of precipitation
variability in South America
- Demonstrated ability to publish scientific articles
- Candidates should be available in the week of 5/Dec - 9/Dec for a
possible skype interview.

*Application:*
Please send, by November 30, an email with title "PD FAPESP CCST / INPE" to
celso.vonrandow@inpe.br or iracema.cavalcanti@cptec.inpe.br, with the
following documents in PDF format:
1) cover letter describing scientific qualifications and interests
2) short CV
3) indication of 2 names for personal references
4) link to personal page on sites like Research Gate, Google Scholar or

University of California, Riverside

The Department of Earth Sciences at UCR is recruiting a faculty member
in the broadly defined area of Climate Change and Sustainability. This
is an academic year tenure track position at the Assistant Professor
level and will be available July 1, 2017.

We seek to hire a faculty member in Climate Change and Sustainability,
working at broad spatial scales over human-relevant time scales, and
with expertise in one or more of the following fields: climate dynamics,
land and ocean surface processes, and ocean/atmosphere interactions. The
candidate is expected to use state-of-the-art models and observations as
the foundation of their research and to work at regional to global
scales. Examples of research foci can include, but are not limited to:
i) interactions among climate and atmospheric constituents, such as
greenhouse gases and aerosols; ii) the dynamics of extreme weather and
climate events; iii) ocean-atmosphere interactions and feedbacks on
global climate; and iv) climate interactions with, and impacts on, soils
and ecosystems. It is desirable that the candidate's research generate
results that can be used by policy makers to enhance sustainable
development of resources. The incumbent would be expected to bridge past
and future climate change research being conducted at UCR, participate
in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in Earth
Sciences—including the newly established Environmental Dynamics and
Geo-Ecology Institute (<http://edge.ucr.edu/>)—and offer courses on
climate change and sustainability within their field of expertise.

A Ph.D. in atmospheric science, environmental science, oceanography, or
a related science discipline is required. Applications must include a
cover letter, curriculum vita, statements of research and teaching
interests, a statement of contributions to diversity, and three letters
of recommendation. All application materials must be submitted through
AP Recruit at: https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00678. Advancement
through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a
series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3
years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

Where You Will Work
This position will be located in the NOAA-UNH Joint Hydrographic Center
(JHC)/Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping on the beautiful campus of
the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH.

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Visiting
Scientist Programs (VSP), in cooperation with NOAA's National Weather
Service (NWS)/Office of Dissemination (DISS) and National Ocean Service
(NOS)/Coast Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL), is seeking
applications for a Visiting Scientist – Software Developer.
VSP partners with federal agencies and universities across the nation to
recruit, hire and provide administrative management to scientists who

prototype common data ingest system to meet the requirements of both
nowCOAST map services and IDP GIS map services in the future. The
common data ingest system will be based on open source software and the
present nowCOAST data ingest framework.
• Assist NCO System Administrators to restore nowCOAST (ArcGIS Server
stack) and IDP GIS web map services (ArcGIS Server stack and GeoServer
stack) back to normal operations following unplanned outages. This will

The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (located near Hamburg, Germany) is investigating energy transfers in the near surface of the ocean. We therefore invite applications for a Ph.D. position (m/f) in the area of "ocean energy pathways". The duration of the position is 3.5 years.

We search for a qualified scientist to investigate the small-scale energy pathways of submesoscale structures in the ocean surface mixed layer. This position is part of a new Collaborative Research Centre "Energy transfers in the Atmosphere and Ocean" conducted together with partners at the University of Hamburg and Bremen, as well as others. The scientist will use large-scale computer facilities to simulate the dynamics of submesoscale structures to understand and quantify their role in energy transfers in the upper ocean. More details of the research centre and project can be found at www.trr-energytransfers.de <http://www.trr-energytransfers.de/>.

Please send your application (in English) indicating job offer code no. 2016/KO8 to Max-Planck-Straße 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or preferably to the e-mail-address: personal@hzg.de <mailto:personal@hzg.de> and include your CV, a list of publications, description of research experience, and a list of references.
Closing date for applications is December 7th, 2016.
