I would like to draw this community's attention to the following position
that we are currently advertising. Applications close 5 October 2012.
FEDERAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST
ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS AND PREDICTABILITY
NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY, WASHINGTON, DC
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) encourages qualified scientists, from
recent graduates to experienced professionals, to apply for a federal
opening in the Near-Space Environments Section (NSES) of NRL's Space
Science Division (SSD). The successful applicant will join a team of
scientists developing global and regional atmospheric prediction tools
extending from the ground to the edge of space (0-100 km). These include:
* NAVGEM, the Navy's next-generation global numerical weather prediction
(NWP) system * COAMPS, the Navy's regional mesoscale NWP system *
NAVDAS-AR, the Navy's four-dimensional variational (4DVAR) data
assimilation system, and * new adjoint- and ensemble-based predictability
tools.
The NSES also leads a new SSD climate modeling initiative using the WACCM
configuration of the NCAR-CESM, conducts fundamental research into the
dynamics of the deep atmosphere using models, data assimilation tools, and
observations, and conducts theoretical work leading to improved physical
parameterizations in models. The focus of current research is to extend
Navy prediction capabilities out to seasonal time scales, with specific
emphasis in NSES on deep coupling pathways between the troposphere and the
near space (stratosphere/mesosphere). Our work supports related
international programs such as DynVAR, SNAP and DEEPWAVE. Further
information can be found at the NSES web site:
http://geospace.nrl.navy.mil/gst/?content=section;code=7631.
Relevant qualifications and experience for this position include (but are
not restricted to):
* experience with state-of-the-art atmospheric NWP models and 4DVAR data
assimilation algorithms on high-performance computing (HPC) systems *
theoretical grounding and hands-on experience in the application or
development of state-of-the-art atmospheric models and data assimilation
systems/techniques * strong programming skills, especially Interactive Data
Language and Python, and particularly MPI Fortran 90/95 in application to
development of NWP models and data-assimilation algorithms * theoretical
grounding in the physics and dynamics of the deep atmosphere (0-100 km) *
excellent writing skills, with a demonstrated ability/potential to write
peer-reviewed scientific papers and novel scientific proposals for
submission to funding agencies * minimum requirements are a Bachelors
Degree in a relevant discipline, with Ph. D. preferred. Formal applications
or questions should be emailed to Dr. Steve Eckermann
(stephen.eckermann@nrl.navy.mil: Tel. 202-404-1299). Applications close 5
October 2012. NRL is an equal opportunity employer.

Postdoc Position (m/f)
Code no. 2012/KS 8
The Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geestacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a 3-year Postdoc Position (m/f) with a possible extension for the project "Earth System Knowledge Platform - Observation, Information & Transfer (ESKP)"
The department of Data Analysis and Data Assimilation at the Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the field of numerical modelling of regional coastal circulation, surface waves, sediment transport, data assimilation and remote sensing. The department is partner in ESKP, and the leader of Work package "Hochwasser, St?rme oder Sturmfluten, Erosion, Unf?lle in der Deutschen Bucht" which aims at developing tools for synoptic analysis of coastal environment in the German Boight and elsewhere needed to solve practical tasks accompanying offshore activities (?l- und Gasf?rderung, Windenergie) and address catastrophic events. The foreseen work combines modern observational methods, advanced numerical modelling and data assimilation. Specific users-oriented products will be developed including currents, wind waves, thermodynamic and biogeochemistry fields. Another focal activity will be concerned with the longer-term analyses of environmental changes and their relevance to solving practical problems related to Marine Strategy Directive and coastal protection.
The successful applicant will have a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or related disciplines. A strong background in modelling and programming, in particular ocean and/or atmosphere models is desirable. Good skills in scientific programming (FORTRAN) as well as working with computers (Unix/Linux) are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and oral).
Appointment will begin as soon as possible.
We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
Please send your application indicating job offer Code no. 2012/KS 8 to Max-Planck-Stra?e 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or to the e-mail-address: personal@hzg.de. Please include your CV, a statement of interest and the names and addresses of three references. Closing date for applications is September 10th, 2012.
