Background


MetOffice@Reading consists of approximately 25 Met Office scientists based in the world renowned Reading University Department of Meteorology. The Reading unit is part of the Met Office Academic Partnership and its purpose is to enable collaborative work with University researchers. The Mesoscale Modelling Research Group is part of the Atmospheric Processes and Parameterisations section of the Met Office (the rest of which is in Exeter) and also works closely with the MetOffice@Reading Advanced Nowcasting group. The group carries out work on various aspects of km - 100m scale short range versions of the Unified Model in collaboration with both university scientists and Met Office scientists in Exeter. Current foci of work in the group include representation of convection, predictability and ensembles and urban meteorology.


Purpose of job


To carry out collaborative research into high resolution versions of the Unified Model and their applications.


Job responsibilities


* To carry out research and development on the formulation, performance and applications of high resolution models to deliver agreed project outputs which improve Met Office systems, products or advice for the benefit of customers.
* To design and implement experiments using the Unified Model/suites along with other software systems as required in order to carry out agreed research.
* To carry out collaborative work with university colleagues.
* To contribute to the presentation and publication/documentation of their team's work in order to communicate advice and/or maintain our scientific/technical capability and integrity and/or to promote our reputation.
* To contribute to the writing of their job plan to support the research and development programme.
* To provide scientific/technical advice to other team members on some work aspects to improve the effectiveness of the team.


Qualifications, skills and abilities required


Essential

* Scientist: A PhD in Mathematics or a physical science or equivalent research experience

Senior Scientist: Evidence of significant relevant postdoctoral level experience with a good meteorological publications record.
* Proven ability at conducting research, displaying the necessary scientific insight, independence and analytical skills.
* Computing skills: Experience of programming to solve scientific problems and/or carry out data analysis.
* Proven ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Ability to tailor communications to take into account the needs and knowledge of the intended audience.
* Proven ability to work effectively in a team.

Desirable

* Knowledge and experience of atmospheric science, preferably mesoscale meteorology.
* Experience of atmospheric models, ideally km scale NWP models.
* Experience of Fortran, Unix ,IDL and python.


Additional information


This post will be based in MetOffice@Reading which is located at Reading University. The post will require some travel to the Met Office HQ in Exeter (mostly day trips but occasional longer stays, e.g. for training courses and workshops).

The postholder will have the opportunity to become involved in various university projects including field programs and will have access to numerous research groups, seminars etc in the Reading University Meteorology Department.

In the longer term the post holder may have the opportunity to develop their career further by transferring to the Met Office HQ in Exeter.

If the successful candidate is currently in a role within the Met Office Scientific Framework, they will ordinarily remain in the role to which they are currently mapped.

FP7 NEMOH ITN: Fellowship position in atmospheric transport at Barcelona Supercomputing Center



JOB SUMMARY

We seek a highly motivated candidate for a three-years PhD research position in the frame of the FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network ?NEMOH: Numerical, Experimental and Stochastic Modelling of Volcanic Processes and Hazard: an Initial Training Network for the next generation of European Volcanologists? (www.nemoh-itn.eu).

The goal of the project is to develop and to implement a highly efficient parallelized code for modelling atmospheric transport of volcanic ash and aerosols at scales from regional to global. Research objectives include: i) forecasting of ash dispersal using ensemble strategies for eruption source parameters and quasi real time data assimilation, ii) evaluation of volcanic ash hazard and, iii) study feedback effects between fine volcanic ash and aerosols and atmosphere.



JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will work for three years (January 2013 ? December 2015) at the Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (CASE) Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center ? Centro Nacional de Supercomputaci?n (BSC-CNS, www.bsc.es). The CASE Department hosts more than 40 multidisciplinary researchers having backgrounds in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and Computer Science. The research will be developed within the framework of a highly cooperative international network comprising 13 Institutions from 8 European countries forming the NEMOH consortium (see the NEMOH website for further information). The appointment includes mandatory secondments, to be agreed upon with the successful candidate, for a total period of 3 to 9 months, at one or more major international institutions performing top-level research of interest for the purposes of the present research, either within or outside the NEMOH consortium. Access to PhD will be though the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC; www.upc.es). Background in atmospheric sciences, numerical modelling and physical volcanology and a Master degree will be strongly considered. The candidates must meet the following requisites: 1) any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity (job or studies) in Spain for more than 1 year in the past 3 years; 2) no more than 4 years may have passed since completion of the degree that in their country gives access to a PhD; 3) not having completed a PhD. Current PhD students can apply.

Ching School of Graduate Studies Entrance Scholarship? (HK$66,100;

The Towson University Department of Geography and Environmental Planning
seeks a broadly-trained physical geographer with specialization in
climatology for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position starting in
August 2013.

Position: Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to
excellence in teaching and working with diverse populations of students.
Responsibilities will include supporting the department and our minor in
Meteorology by teaching classes in introductory physical geography,
meteorology, climatology, climate change, the interaction of society
with the environment, and an upper-level elective and/or graduate-level
course in the candidate's area of specialization. The successful
candidate will be expected to work with geography graduate students and
support undergraduate research. Resources include a physical geography
teaching laboratory, a weather station, computer laboratories, and two
research laboratories for geomorphology and meteorology. There is
potential for working with the media studies program to provide students
with experience in broadcast meteorology, and NOAA headquarters is
located an hour away in Silver Spring, MD. A Ph.D. is required; A.B.D
will be considered for those expecting to complete the degree by summer
2013.

Postdoctoral Researcher Position
Climate Change Adaptation: Understanding Farmers' and Advisors' Needs

Dr. Linda Prokopy at Purdue University seeks a postdoctoral researcher
to assist with an ongoing USDA-AFRI project entitled "Useful to Usable
(U2U): Transforming Climate Variability and Change Information for
Cereal Crop Producers." This project seeks to improve the resilience and
profitability of farms in the North Central Region of the United States
amid variable climate change through the dissemination of decision
support tools, resource materials and training. The postdoctoral
researcher will assist with the social science elements of this project
which include a series of ongoing focus groups with farmers and their
advisors. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for developing
research questions, assessing knowledge, attitude and behavior change as
a result of focus groups, interpreting focus group findings for the team
developing decision support tools, and writing journal articles.
Additionally the postdoctoral researcher will help with analysis of
survey data collected in 2012 focused on beliefs, attitudes and
practices of farmers and their advisors related to climate information.
Pending receipt of additional funds, the postdoctoral researcher will
also be responsible for collecting a second round of survey data from
advisors, analyzing the data for change, and writing journal articles.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in natural resources social
sciences, sociology, political science, geography or a closely aligned
field. Applicants should have experience with a variety of social
science methods. Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
are essential for this position. A preference will be given to a
candidate with experience using structural equation models. The position
can start as early as January 2013 and will last for at least one year.

and Space Sciences at the University of Michigan.

The Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences (AOSS) in the
College of Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor
invites applications for an open rank, tenure or tenure-track faculty
position. We welcome applicants who are working in the intersections
between the physically based understandings, monitoring, or predictions
of global or regional climate changes and the implications of such
changes for water, energy, or other socio-economic policies. Applicants
working on physical, chemical, or biogeochemical aspects of these issues
are all encouraged to apply. Relevant areas are, but not limited to, (1)
understanding, quantifying, and reducing parametric and structural
uncertainties in earth system modeling for improving climate
projections, (2) understanding extreme weather events or other
low-probability-high-impact events in the context of future climate
change and improving the assessment of their social-economic impacts,
(3) climate variability and its impact on regional water and energy
policies, (4) climate monitoring for climate policy needs and policy
evaluations.

This position was awarded to the Department under the Interdisciplinary
Faculty Cluster Hire initiative of the University.The Cluster Hire
includes one other position in the School of Natural Resources and the
Environment with a focus on Modeling and Assessment of Climate Change
and Impacts. Successful candidates will work in their primary
disciplinary area but will ideally also contribute to the development of
greater cohesion among the diverse group of faculty with relevant

University. Research conducted within the Department covers glaciology,
atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, atmospheric chemistry, air pollution,
aerosol-cloud-climate interactions, radiative transfer and remote
sensing, as well as upper atmospheric physics, mesosphere-to-ionosphere
coupling, and space weather. Strong expertise exists in instrumentation
and observation, numerical simulations, as well as theoretical studies.
In addition to the regular PhD program, the AOSS department also offers
Master of Engineering programs in Applied Climate and Space Engineering.
