Two PhD positions open in my theoretical oceanography/geophysical fluid
dynamics group.
Both positions are in submesoscale dynamics in the ocean. Possible
topics are:
- extending dynamical system tools to identify Lagrangian coherent
structure to three dimensions and application to the oceanic mixed layer
- study of submesoscale dynamics making use of the semigeostrophic and
surface semi-geostrophic approximations, and comparison with other
approximations and simulations/data
- mixing in the ocean interior due to mixed layer instabilities: effects
of diurnal and seasonal cycles, possibility to parameterize the mixing, etc
Some good knowledge in geophysical fluid dynamics and/or dynamical
systems would be desirable.
The official announcements, with instructions on how to apply are here:

http://www.verwaltung.uni-hamburg.de/stellenangebote/wissmit/Geoscience_31-01-13.pdf

A note on the length of the contracts:
- one position is advertised as expiring on September 30, 2015. This
short period is due to the fact that at the end of my third year in
Hamburg my position will be evaluated, and they do not want me to
advertise a position longer than this first period. If my position will
be re-confirmed, the PhD position will be extended for one more year.
- one position is advertised as 24 months long. Additional 12 months
will be paid under the SFB proposal "Below the Rossby radius". This
proposal has not been submitted already. Waiting for the proposal to be
submitted and hopefully funded I will apply for extra external funding,
in order to make sure that the third year will be funded.

Postdoctoral Position in Earth System Analysis to Inform Decisionmaking

*Department of Geosciences*
*The Pennsylvania State University*

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Geosciences at
the Pennsylvania State University. The successful candidate will join an
interdisciplinary research team that analyzes two main questions:

(i) How can paleoclimatic and instrumental records improve our mechanistic
understanding of the climate system and inform climate predictions?

(ii) How can this scientific information be used to improve the design of
climate-risk managing strategies?

The ideal candidate would have a strong background in a field such as Earth
system science (e.g., atmospheric science, geosciences, oceanography),
Bayesian statistics, or applied mathematics. Interests in decisionmaking
under uncertainty and in collaborations involving Earth scientists,
statisticians, decision- analysts, economists, and philosophers would be
further advantages.

The candidate will have considerable freedom to collaboratively design the
research within the scope of the broad questions outlined above. Possible
example projects include uncertainty analysis of climate model projections,
decision-analysis of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies,
and risk analysis of proposed geoengineering strategies. The postdoctoral
research associate will enjoy opportunities for transdisciplinary research
collaboration and professional mentoring by a team of experts in relevant
disciplines through the recently-formed Network for Sustainable Climate
Risk Management (http://scrimhub.org).

The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.
Initial appointment will be for a period of one year, with excellent
possibility of renewal for one or more additional years. The salary will be
competitive, commensurate with experience, and will comply with Penn State
University guidelines. Successful completion of a background check is
required prior to employment.

To apply, please email a single PDF file (maximum 10 MB) containing a
letter of interest, a CV, reprints of two manuscripts, and contact
information for three references to Klaus Keller (klaus@psu.edu).

*The Pennsylvania State University is committed to affirmative action,
equal opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce.*

*************************************
The Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North
Carolina State University seeks a postdoctoral research scholar to join a
multi-university collaborative project on optical turbulence. This project
will provide a better understanding of optical propagation in deep
turbulence and long-range (order of ~100 km) atmospheric paths. The
outcomes of this project will have implications for a variety of fields,
including laser communications, remote sensing, imaging, target tracking
and designation, and high-energy laser (HEL) beam projection for directed
energy applications. Anticipated areas of responsibility for the
postdoctoral research scholar include: (1) performing state-of-the-art
mesoscale and large-eddy simulations of optical turbulence, (2) analyzing a
diverse suite of observational datasets (e.g., scintillometer, lidar,
sodar), (3) developing new methodologies for the estimation of the
refractive index structure parameter (Cn2) from modeled data, (4)
presenting research results at various meetings, conferences, and
workshops, (5) publishing in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, and (6)
mentoring several graduate students working on the same project.

The candidate should have: a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in atmospheric
science, meteorology, or a closely related field; in-depth understanding of
boundary-layer meteorology and atmospheric turbulence; working experience
with large-scale atmospheric models (e.g., WRF, ARPS) and/or computational
fluid dynamics codes (e.g., FLUENT, OpenFOAM); strong communication skills;
and ability to work productively in a research team.

It is also desirable if the candidate has: some understanding of large-eddy
simulation (LES); coding experience with Fortran and Matlab/Octave; and
working knowledge of parallel computing and volume visualization.

Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The initial
appointment will last for two years with the possibility of renewal for
additional years contingent upon the postdoctoral research scholar's
overall performance and availability of funding.

The job application website is: https://jobs.ncsu.edu/postings/18239

The candidates are encouraged to contact Prof. Sukanta Basu (
sukanta_basu@ncsu.edu) for any questions regarding this postdoctoral
research scholar position.
