Dear Colleagues,

We seek to appoint an Ocean/Ice Modeller at the British Antarctic Survey.

Based in the Polar Oceans programme, the postholder will join a team investigating ocean and ice variability in the Southern and Arctic oceans. The postholder will be responsible for creating a model of the ocean, sea ice, and ice shelves in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. They will study the formation and evolution of dense water masses in the region, which ultimately contribute to the production of Antarctic Bottom Water. Full details are at:

<http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/employment/vacancies/job.php?tab=1&JobID=863>

The closing date for applications is 11th August 2013, though I'm very happy to answer informal enquiries about the post before then.

Thanks,

Paul

Research Fellow in Atmospheric Chemistry
University of Birmingham

NERC "Integrated Chemistry of Ozone in the Atmosphere" project, working with Dr W Bloss
3 year fixed term contract

Tropospheric ozone is an important secondary pollutant, harmful to human health, ecosystems and materials, an important greenhouse gas and precursor to oxidants such as OH. Quantitative understanding of the chemical production of ozone in the atmosphere is critical to predicting current and future atmospheric composition, and to development of effective policies for future air quality improvements. The aim of this project is to develop and deploy a new instrument for the in situ measurement of atmospheric chemical ozone production in the boundary layer. The project will comprise instrument development in Birmingham, laboratory and simulation chamber validation tests, and field measurements in contrasting locations in the UK and Southern Germany, followed by interpretation of the data obtained. The project is a collaboration with the Universities of Leeds (Prof DE Heard) and UEA (Dr C Reeves), who will deploy supporting instrumentation during the field observations. In addition, it is likely that the successful applicant will have opportunities to participate in other research projects within the group, and to contribute to the supervision of PhD and MSc students in related areas.

Further information on the group's activities and interests can be found at
www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/environmental-health/index.aspx

See University HR website (below) for further details. Potential applicants are encouraged to discuss the position informally with Dr Bill Bloss, Tel. +44 (0)121 414 2558, email w.j.bloss@bham.ac.uk
