Background information
The Met Office, as a world leading authority in meteorology, produces and delivers weather forecasts from a range of deterministic and ensemble numerical weather prediction models, which are used to generate a wide array of products to deliver to customers worldwide.
Post-processing of the raw model data is currently used both to further improve the quality of the data and derive additional forecasts, such as the nowcasts (rapidly updated with the latest observations to provide prediction for the next few hours).
The Commercial Product Development team in Applied Science and Scientific Consultancy specialises in the development of value-adding post-processing systems to ensure our customers are able to make maximum use of our forecast information for their decision making. The team work very closely with related post processing teams in the Weather Science area, IT teams, business colleagues and customers to ensure that the best product possible is developed for our customers. Due to the range of customers that we serve, team members get experience across different product areas, offering variety in the nature of the work.
Specific job purpose
To apply scientific and technical knowledge to contribute to the definition and delivery of value-adding tools, which most optimally meets the evolving customer need.
Specific job responsibilities
? Develop and implement new and improved post-processing techniques that enable the development of valued-added services for customers.
? Contribute to the definition, development and implementation of a seamless, "best" weather forecast.
? Contribute to the development and implementation of underpinning post-processing capability, delivering forecast information, independent of numerical weather prediction model changes that can be used by our customers.
? Help pull-though numerical weather prediction model improvements into weather forecast products.
? Liaise with customers to understand their requirements and inform the definition and delivery of standard weather forecast information best meeting their needs.
? Work closely with Technical & Information Services to develop and implement a streamlined best data process using standard processing, software and scientific data formats.
? Help maintain and support a number of sector-specific products.
Qualifications, skills and abilities required
Essential
? Good honours degree in a physical-/mathematics-based science (2.1 or above) or demonstration of equivalent experience.
? Evidence of the ability to learn and apply simple technical and analytical techniques to basic scientific problems.
? Demonstrated ability to learn and apply software tools and/or programming languages. Experience setting up and running simple code and performing basic analysis.
? Evidence of the ability to work and collaborate as an active and productive member of a team.
? Proven ability to develop new skills quickly.
Desirable
? Software programming experience in Fortran, C, python or IDL.
? Working knowledge of one or more of the following scientific gridded data formats: netCDF, GRIB, Nimrod format, FieldsFile and PP format.
? Knowledge and experience in atmospheric science, numerical modelling or statistical processing.
Additional supplementary information
If the successful candidate is currently in the Met Office scientific framework, they will ordinarily remain in the role to which they are currently mapped.

School of Chemistry, University of Leeds

NERC funded PhD studentships in Atmospheric Chemistry

Starting Date: 1 October 2013

?

Applications are invited for two fully funded NERC PhD studentships in
Atmospheric Chemistry.

?

You will work in well-equipped laboratories and be part of an active,
thriving and well-funded atmospheric chemistry community within the School
of Chemistry, which contains the groups of Professors Dwayne Heard, John
Plane and Paul Seakins. The School has an internationally leading
reputation in atmospheric chemistry for field measurements of atmospheric
composition, laboratory studies of chemical kinetics and photochemistry,
and the development of numerical models and chemical mechanisms, including
the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM). Activities in these three areas are
intimately linked and interdependent, providing a significant advantage.
The Leeds FAGE (fluorescence assay by gas expansion) instruments are part
of the suite of field measurement facilities supported by the National
Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), which is hosted in Leeds. You will
be supported to attend both national and international conferences, and
will receive a wide range of training, for example in communication
skills, project management, and with other technical aspects (lasers,
optics, vacuum systems, data acquisition, Labview and computing).

?

Standard NERC eligibility rules apply. Applicants should have a First or
2:1 degree in Chemistry or a related discipline, or have a 2:2 degree and
also a Masters qualification. Applicants should be a UK Citizen, or an EU
Citizen who has lived in the UK for the last 3 years undertaking
undergraduate or masters education. The studentship will cover the
successful applicant?s fees and provides the standard NERC PhD stipend.
