Could you please post the following job announcement on your site? Thanks.
Dave Whiteman
Research Professor
University of Utah
--------------------------
Postdoctoral Research Associate - Mountain Meteorology
The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah (http://www.atmos.utah.edu) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of boundary layer meteorology and/or mountain meteorology. The post-doc will work on a recently funded grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate katabatically driven downslope-windstorm-type flows that are produced by flow over topographical obstacles. A field study planned for October 2013 in Arizona's Barringer Meteorite Crater will produce a large data set that can be used to investigate intermittent windstorms and hydraulic jumps that develop there (http://www.inscc.utah.edu/~whiteman/metcrax2/). The goals of the research program are 1) to analyze the field data, 2) to develop and test hypotheses for mechanisms leading to the windstorm break-ins, and 3) to use atmospheric models to accurately simulate these events.
The successful applicant will work collaboratively within a small research group and there will be opportunities for the applicant to participate in meteorological field programs, to propose and conduct independent research, to attend conferences to present research results and to write research papers.
Qualified applicants must have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or a closely related field. The ideal candidate will have a background in data processing, data analysis and visualization, and atmospheric modeling. The applicant would have a strong mathematics and physics background, excellent writing skills, programming abilities using Linux, FORTRAN, IDL/Matlab and proficiency with numerical models such as WRF, CM1 or ARPS.
Please submit applications by 1 October 2013; review of completed applications will begin on this date. The starting date is flexible, and the position will remain open until filled. The appointment is for two years, contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of research funds. To apply, send a cover letter describing research experience and interests, a curriculum vitae including a list of scientific publications, if applicable, and contact information for three professional references to:
Prof. C. David Whiteman
dave.whiteman@utah.edu
Informal inquiries can be made to Dr. Whiteman at (801)585-1414.
Additional Information:This position may require the successful completion of a criminal background check and/or drug screen.
Equal Employment Opportunity: The University of Utah is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer. Upon request, reasonable accommodations in the application process will be provided to individuals with disabilities. Please contact the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, 201 S. Presidents Cr., Rm 135, (801) 581-8365 (V/TDD), for further information or to request an accommodation. The University of Utah is committed to diversity in its workforce. Scientific Programmer (m/f) ? MPIM2013-14 ?
to contribute to the development of a European Radiative Transfer Library.
The successful applicant will help lead an initiative to develop a fast, efficient, and computationally well-structured radiative transfer library for use by Earth System Models. The development will be based on an existing radiative transfer code, and provide a common framework for its incorporation in different Earth System Models.
Applicants with a strong software engineering background, with expertise in Fortran, C/C++, and library concepts, are especially sought after. Familiarity with meteorology or radiative transfer is a plus, as is a PhD, but not necessary. Good communication skills, availability to travel and cooperate with code developments in partnering institutes in Paris and Exeter are also desirable.
The initial term of appointment is for 14 months and may begin immediately. Payment will be in accordance with experience following the German public service positions (TVoeD E13/14), which include extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service. The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
For further information, please contact Reinhard Budich (reinhard.budich(at) mpimet.mpg.de); applications should be directed to the address listed below.
