We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to investigate the impacts of biomass burning aerosols (BBA) on the dynamics of weather systems in South America and the implications for weather forecasts, climate and climate projections. The work will use a synthesis of simulations and new field observations from the South American Biomass Burning Analysis (SAMBBA) consortium project.

Project Scientist
International Coordination Office (ICO)
for Polar Prediction
The successful applicant will have the following responsibilities:
? Provision of scientific, technical and administrative support to the Steering Group of the WWRP (World Weather Research Programme) Polar Prediction Project (PPP)
? Support and coordination of planning and implementation of PPP activities
? Assistance in cooperation between the PPP and appropriate Working Groups and Experts Teams within WWRP, World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), Commission of the Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) and other partners? relevant activities as well as in particular with the WCRP Polar Climate Predictability Initiative to ensure progress in delivering the Global Integrated Polar Prediction System (GIPPS)
? Organzitation of appropriate meetings, conferences, educational events and other activities related to PPP
? Preparation of reports and publications
? Management of the PPP website
? Fund raising and recruiting secondments to join the ICO
This job provides the opportunity to work closely with some of the world?s leading experts in the field of weather and climate prediction. Furthermore, the incumbent can obtain substantial insight into the functioning of internationally coordinated research activities. There will also be the opportunity to carry out polar prediction related research (approx. 30% of the time).
Background: There has been a growing interest in the Polar Regions in recent years, because of concerns about amplification of anthropogenic climate change. Furthermore, increased economic and transportation activities in polar regions are leading to more demands for sustained and improved availability of integrated observational and predictive weather, climate and water information to support decision-making. However, many gaps in weather, sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasting in the Polar Regions hamper reliable decision making, partly as a result of a strong emphasis of previous international efforts on lower and middle latitudes.
The aim of the WWRP Polar Prediction Project (WWRP-PPP) therefore is to ?Promote cooperative international research enabling development of improved weather and environmental prediction services for the Polar Regions, on time scales from hours to seasonal.? This project constitutes the hours to seasonal research component of the WMO Global Integrated Polar Prediction System (GIPPS).

Requirements: We seek a scientist with an excellent PhD in atmospheric sciences, oceanography or climate sciences. The successful candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English, have substantial communication skills and be able to work independently. Experience in the area of (polar) weather, seasonal and climate prediction is a distinct advantage. The post is associated with a significant amount of international travel and networking activities.
