The JAXA's Aerospace Project Research Associate recruitment has just started. JAXA calls for researchers participation with research experience in atmospheric science, in particular, studies related to cloud and precipitation.

http://www.jaxa.jp/employ/index_e.html

[Themes]
19. Development of methods to integrate satellite observations and numerical weather/climate models

[Details]
JAXA has promoted various missions, such as Global Precipitation Measurement
(GPM) with the NASA, Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer
(EarthCARE) with the ESA. Satellite data simulator can be very helpful for more distinct validation of numerical weather and climate model using the data from the satellite observation. The JAXA has developed Joint Simulator for Satellite Sensors (JointSimulator). Satellite simulators can be used as a tool to take in the satellite data to assimilation system. The data assimilation of the satellite data will be expected to be carried out in the joint-work of the JAXA and the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Project researchers of this application are expected to contribute to research to integrate the GPM/EarthCARE data and numerical weather/climate models.

[Places of work]
Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan

[Application Deadline]
September 27th , 2013

Physical Oceanographer

Marine Physics and Ocean Climate group, National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool

About the role:

We are seeking a scientist to study the regional sea level projections with high-end RCP scenarios by 2100. This post is funded by EU project ?Responses to coastal climate change: Innovative strategies for high end scenarios-Adaptation and Mitigation? (RISES-AM). The aim of the project is to study implications of high-end scenarios (global average warming >2?C) for coastal areas associated with sea level rise and changes in extreme sea levels by 2100. This will allow a better quantification of impacts and vulnerabilities associated with sea level rise, showing that adaptation is possible at an affordable cost (compared to risk) and will serve to inform policy and decision makers, contributing to raise awareness on the multiple dimensions of possible adaptation pathways.

As a researcher in the RISES-AM project, you will assemble regional sea level projections with high end RCP scenarios by 2100. As a part of your role you will use outputs from CMIP5 model runs to calculate steric component of sea level rise and examine contribution from melting of glaciers and ice sheets. Maps of regional sea level changes will result from regional patterns of mass changes of the ocean from glaciers and ice sheets and changes in thermal expansion of the ocean with RCP scenarios. You will write scientific papers and present findings at project workshops and international scientific conferences

This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available initially for a fixed term of 2 years.

Salary:

?26,450 to ?29,710 per annum

About you:

You will have strong computational and programming skills, have a PhD in Maths/Physics/ environmental science, and have experience in working with large data sets. Your first degree will be in physical sciences, engineering, mathematics or oceanography. A proven ability in scientific publication or experience in numerical modelling would be advantageous and good communications skills are essential.

What we can offer you:

In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 10.5 Public/privilege days. Opportunities for further training and development are supported. The role will include periods of travel both within the UK and internationally.

About us:

The National Oceanography Centre is an international leader in sea level science and the development and application of coastal numerical models.

General enquiries (about the role only), can be directed to Dr Svetlana Jevrejeva (sveta@noc.ac.uk<mailto:sveta@noc.ac.uk>) or Dr Judith Wolf (jaw@noc.ac.uk<mailto:jaw@noc.ac.uk>)

I wanted to let you know that the JRC offers a grant enabling students
to work towards a PhD title. While the student must be registered at a
university the R&D work - which is largely based on 3D RT modelling -
will be carried out at the premises of the JRC in Ispra.

I would be grateful if you could distribute this email to potentially
interested students.

with best regards,

Jean-Luc

PhD grant: Standards for the validation of geophysical remote sensing products

Please find attached a vacancy note for a 36 month doctoral research
grant made available by the European Commission's Joint Research
Centre in Ispra, Italy. The PhD work will focus on model-based
verifications of the quality of field measurement protocols typically
used in the estimation of biophysical land ECVs (e.g., LAI, FAPAR and
surface albedo).

The deadline for this call is: 20th September 2013.

The identifier of the call is: 2013-IPR-H-20-000-2173

Applications can be launched (by clicking on the green 'APPLY' link
for the grant-holder position 2013-IPR-H-20-000-2173 - CAT 20 - ISPRA)
from the JRC's vacancy webpage:

http://recruitment.jrc.ec.europa.eu/?type=GH&inst=3511

Potential candidates should be aware that they will have to register
with a university but that their PhD work is carried out on the
premises of the JRC located at the shores of lake Maggiore in the
foothills of the Italian Alps. A host of general information on the
grantholders scheme can be found here:
