Project: Ph. D. position in urban meteorology modeling starting early 2014. The student's work will first focus on using the fast-response and high-resolution dispersion model QUIC (http://www.lanl.gov/projects/quic/) to evaluate the performance of urban heat island mitigation strategies (e.g. high albedo roofs, urban greening) for a Montreal neighborhood. Then, the student will work on an initial implementation of a snow surface/atmosphere interaction module into QUIC. In addition, the student will likely be invited to participate in field measurement campaigns. This project is in close collaboration with Prof. Eric Pardyjak from University of Utah, and other collaborators from the GEnUSis project in the USA (http://envsim.d.umn.edu/) with whom the student will frequently interact.
Student: The prospective student should have a strong background and interest in programming, meteorology and physics, and should be willing to start his PhD in spring or summer 2014.
Institution: Polytechnique Montreal is one of Canada?s leading engineering schools and the largest in Quebec in terms of its student population and the scope of its research activities, with more than 7,500 students and 1,000 employees. The Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering at Polytechnique Montr?al employs 34 professors in various fields, such as environmental fluid mechanics, applied hydraulics, and seismic engineering. Although graduate studies at Polytechnique Montreal are commonly carried out in English, Montreal life presents a unique opportunity to learn French.
