Forwarded from CLIMLIST...
Two interdisciplinary PhD positions available at the University of
Delaware to study climate and landscape controls on soil, water, and
gaseous fluxes of carbon and nitrogen
Two positions are available on a new and exciting USDA-funded project
that explores how catchment topography and extreme weather events
influence the solid, aqueous, and gas phase of C and N in soils and
wetlands. We will combine state-of-the-art instrumentation for field
measurements, a climate-change experiment, and conceptual and
mathematical modeling to evaluate these responses.
For the first position the student will establish a climate-change
experiment in order to collect continuously (hourly resolution) a full
range of greenhouse gas (CH_4 , CO_2 , H_2 O, N_2 O, and NH_3 ) fluxes
from soils and study the solid and aqueous phases of C and N compounds
in a temperate wetland. The candidate should have strong analytical and
quantitative skills, experience in handling large data sets, proven
skills in data processing and statistics (e.g., MATLAB, R), and
experience with dataloggers and field instrumentation.
In the second position the student will explore how catchment topography
and hydrology combine to influence the spatio-temporal patterns of C and
N in soil, water, and gas phases. Landscape topography will be
characterized using GIS whereas soil and water C will be analyzed using
novel, rapid, spectrofluorometric techniques. The candidate should have
a strong background in hydrology and biogeochemistry, knowledge of C and
N cycles, and experience with field sampling.
Both of these students will be recruited through the exciting,
interdisciplinary graduate program in Water Science and Policy
(www.udel.edu/watersciencepolicy
<http://www.udel.edu/watersciencepolicy>) and will co-advised by Drs.
Rodrigo Vargas and Shreeram Inamdar.
The positions are for 36 months with a starting date of February 1^st
2014, and will remain open until filled with review of applications and
interviews starting on November 1st. Outstanding UD student benefits
include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; access to UD
recreation and cultural activities; and more!
Applications and inquiries should be sent to Rodrigo Vargas
(rvargas@udel.ed <mailto:rvargas@udel.ed>u) and Shreeram Inamdar
(<mailto:rbirdsey@fs.fed.us>inamdar@udel.edu <mailto:inamdar@udel.edu>).
Applications should include (1) a detailed curriculum vitae, (2)
statement on research interests and previous experience, (3) GPA and GRE
scores, and (4) names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of
at least two references.
Please include in the headline of the email: PhD application for USDA grant

The Institute for Coastal Research of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht,
Germany, invites applications for a 3.5-year
PhD position (m/f)
code no. 2013/KS 1
starting January 1st, 2014 and ending June 30th, 2017 as part of the
project ?Regional storms and their marine impacts?.
This project is part of the Cluster of Excellence ?Integrated Climate
System Analysis and Prediction? (CliSAP). The main task is the analysis
of storm variability at the regional scale for the coasts of Northern
Germany both for the past decades and for possible future scenarios.
Therefore very high-resolution regional climate model simulations will
be computed and analysed for extra-tropical storms and their coastal
impacts. The shadowing effects of islands close to the coasts will be
examined. In addition, different possible locations for wind parks shall
be evaluated depending on their energy potential.
This project is collaboration between the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht,
the University of Hamburg, the German Weather Forecast Service, and the
Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology. The position is located at the
Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany.
Required qualifications are:
- master/diploma (or be about to complete) in meteorology/atmospheric
physics or in a related scientific field (e.g., geophysics or Earth
system science)
- strong interest in storms and atmospheric dynamics
- experience in a higher programming language
- ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
(German would be an advantage)
- experience with atmospheric climate models
- good knowledge of statistics and data analysis
- strong motivation, also to publish results in peer-reviewed journals
Appointment will begin as soon as possible. We offer an appropriate
salary related to the German public tariff (TV-AVH) plus the usual
social benefits for the public employment sector. The Helmholtz-Zentrum
Geesthacht is an equal opportunity employer for women, minorities, and
people with disabilities, and strives to increase the percentage of
women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal
qualifications will be considered preferentially.
Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2013/KS 1 to
our human resources personal@hzg.de. Please include your CV and copies
of master/diploma university certificates, names of two references, a
record of publications and certificates proving your language skills.
Application period from September 19th, 2013 to October 17th, 2013
