Background information
The foundation of the Met Office's success in operational numerical weather and climate prediction is its Unified Model (UM). The UM is built around its dynamical core which encompasses the numerical solution of the non-hydrostatic set of equations governing atmospheric flow. Specifically the dynamical core simulates the fluid dynamical processes of the atmosphere that can be resolved by the model.
Dynamics Research (DR) is a small group that is responsible for all aspects of the UM's current and future dynamical cores. The group is currently working to make operational a replacement dynamical core (ENDGame) which will improve the model's robustness, accuracy and efficiency. At the same time we are the lead partner in GungHo, a joint project with Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) and Science and Technology Facility Council (STFC) that is researching and developing the design of a dynamical core suitable for use on supercomputers that we envisage will be available at the end of this decade. The efficient use of such machines will require a model with a step change in scalability. This requires the replacement of the current latitude-longitude grid with a more uniform structure. The challenge is to achieve this whilst at least maintaining the accuracy of the current UM.
Specific job purpose
As part of a team, to develop, validate and implement the next dynamical core of the UM in order to improve the model's scalability whilst at least maintaining its accuracy and robustness.
Specific job responsibilities
? To undertake fundamental research to develop numerical methods and algorithms for the next generation dynamical core.
? To develop the 3D prototype of that dynamical core so that its scalability, accuracy and robustness can be assessed.
? Using numerical analysis and carefully designed numerical experimentation, to validate the performance of the prototype model in order to identify any weaknesses in the formulation.
? To research, develop and implement solutions to address any weaknesses and improve the performance of the prototype.
? To develop the operational prototype with particular attention to optimisation on a massively parallel supercomputer architecture to ensure the benefits of the new dynamical core are realised.
? To publish results within international peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences to maintain scientific credibility and the Met Office's reputation.
? As part of the wider DR team, to contribute to the maintenance and continual development of the operational dynamical core of the Unified Model.
Qualifications, skills and abilities required
Essential
? All: A good degree (2:1 or above) in mathematics or a physical science.
Scientist: A PhD in mathematics or a physical science or equivalent research experience.
Senior scientist: substantial post-doctoral experience in this specific area of atmospheric science.
? Proven ability to conduct scientific research, displaying initiative, independence, analytical and mathematical skills.
? Evidence of the motivation and drive to overcome obstacles in order to solve scientific problems.
? Evidence of the ability to write software to address scientific questions.
? All: Evidence of the ability to work flexibly within a team.
Senior Scientist: Evidence of ability to provide scientific/technical leadership or mentoring to junior staff.
? Evidence of good oral and written scientific communication skills (e.g. writing reports, giving presentations).
Desirable
? Evidence of ability to perform numerical analysis and apply it to practical problems.
? A good fluid dynamical background, particularly of geophysical fluid dynamics.
? Experience of a scientific computing environment, for example using Fortran, IDL/Python or UNIX/LINUX.

Dynamics Research has a very close working relationship with one of the Met Office Joint Chairs at Exeter as well as significant interaction with a number of universities via the GungHo project. The post therefore offers considerable opportunity for personal development in a number of complementary areas.

the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management,
The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.
The Visiting Fellow is an opportunity for an academic or researcher to
play an active role within the School over a period of 18 weeks while on
leave from their own institution.
Academics or researchers with a broad interest in the research and
teaching areas of the School's Geographical Sciences program including
in the disciplines of climatology and meteorology are invited to apply.
The Fellowship will be offered for approximately 16 to 18 weeks in 2014
(February ? June, or July ? December) and will include an attractive
stipend to cover living expenses and economy class return airfare via
