Background information
Customers are increasingly requesting information over a broad range of timescales in order to understand how weather and climate affects their interests. Translation of our core scientific expertise into bespoke products and services is scientifically and technically challenging and was the key driver behind the creation of the Applied Science Directorate earlier this year.
In addition to customers within Government, we currently provide guidance to a wide range of sectors including those in the energy, transport, retail, marine, mining and water industries. The Insurance and Capital Markets sector has been recognised as a key area that will directly contribute to the continuing success of the Met Office. In order to realise these aspirations, a Science Team is being created to develop the capabilities that are expected by these scientifically demanding customers. The team will initially focus on development of hazard services with the expectation that the team members will influence and contribute to the development of a wider range of services in the longer term.
Reporting to the Science Manager of the Insurance and Capital Markets Science team, the postholder will work across weather and climate timescales to deliver industry focussed science, tools and products. Graduate Student Position at North Carolina A&T State University

Applications are encouraged for a graduate student position focusing on regional climate modeling and analysis with WRF. The CCSM4 forced WRF simulations will be evaluated with the in-situ observations and satellite retrievals to identify model biases and uncertainties. Then the regional climate simulations over Alaska for the entire 21st century will be analyzed to examine the study area?s hydroclimatic features and changes under greenhouse gas forcing.

The position is based at the Department of Physics or Department of Energy & Environmental Systems, North Carolina A&T State University, with funding support from NSF and DoI.

We seek for candidates with degree in atmospheric/geoscience, natural science, or other relevant subjects including university level mathematics and physics. Modeling and programming experience is desirable. The starting date is negotiable, but preferably as soon as possible.

POSTDOC vacancy (Temporary position)
Date 10 oktober 2013
Number KNMI 2013/11

At the Global Climate Division of the KNMI, in De Bilt, the Netherlands,
there is a
temporary position for:

Post doc

General information

KNMI is the national knowledge institute on weather, climate and climate
change in the Netherlands. An important task of KNMI is to describe and
attribute changes in climate. KNMI develops and publishes national
climate change scenarios which are primarily aimed to guide climate
adaptation. KNMI collaborates with national and international
institutions and researchers. Numerical models of the large scale
atmospheric and oceanic circulation, of sea ice and of the land surface
are used for climate research and development of climate scenarios. Also
observations of the climate system are used to diagnose climate
variability and change.

Job information

After nearly every extreme weather event the question rises whether
anthropogenic climate change has contributed to it and whether the
occurrence and amplitude of extreme events will change in the future.
The candidate will contribute to research on extreme events as part of
the international SPECS and EUCLEIA projects sponsored by the European.
The candidate will investigate the predictability of extreme events and
to what extend they can be attributed to natural climate processes and
to anthro pogenic climate change. The candidate will investigate
physical processes of a selected number of extreme weather events that
occurred recently. Observations, reanalysis data and specific numerical
model simulations will be used for that purpose. Also, the candidate
will make climate predictions with a statistical model and compare it to
predictions made with the complex climate model EC-Earth.

Required
? Phd in meteorology or a similar field of studies
? Analytical skills, knowledge of meteorological and physical climate
processes and of statistical methods used in weather and climate research.
? Ample experience with the technical environment of complex numerical
models (compilers, libraries, version management etc)
? Fluent in English (spoken and written)

Working place: De Bilt
Salary: Max ? 4.380,72 gross per month (salaryscale 11)

Details
The position is temporary for a period of 3 years.
More information can be obtained from prof. dr. ir. Wilco Hazeleger,

2 PhD studentships are available, fully funded for applicants meeting NERC's eligibility requirements for UK nationality or residence. Both projects are available either for an immediate start, or for the usual October 2014 entry. Informal enquires can be made to Dr Elizabeth Kent (eck@noc.ac.uk<mailto:eck@noc.ac.uk>), and information on how to apply can be found via the Graduate School website (http://noc.ac.uk/gsnocs).

Climate change from centuries of historical ship observations
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This PhD project is tied to the NERC HOSTACE project (http://projects.noc.ac.uk/HOSTACE/) and will investigate the climate change signals in a large archive of historical weather observations from ships, using resources including the NOAA 20th-Century Reanalysis. This PhD is linked to the OldWeather "citizen science" project and has co-supervision from the Met Office Hadley Centre. More information: http://noc.ac.uk/gsnocs/project/climate-change-from-centuries-historical-ship-observations

Accuracy and representativeness of surface observations of marine carbon
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This PhD project is tied to the NERC RAGNARRoC project and will assess the accuracy of fields of surface ocean carbon generated from ship-based observations using output from state-of-the-art numerical ocean models. These fields of surface carbon concentrations are needed to estimate the air-sea exchange of CO2, an important part of the global carbon cycle.
