Assistant Professor - Environmental Science

The Department of Geography at the University of Toronto Mississauga
(UTM) invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Environmental
Science at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2014.

The Department seeks a candidate with a research focus on measuring
and/or modeling the movement of pollutants and other chemical substances
within ecosystems, and assessing their impacts on human health or other
organisms. Potential areas of specialization include urban environments,
aquatic systems, and/or terrestrial systems including forests.
Candidates should be able to identify how their research is related to
broader themes within sustainability science and environmental management.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Geography, Environmental
Science, Sustainability Science or a related discipline by the time of
appointment or shortly thereafter. Evidence of excellence in scholarly
research, publication and teaching is required. Applications from
candidates whose research includes a multidisciplinary perspective and
the use of integrative approaches to analyze and manage sustainability
issues are highly encouraged. Climate scientists are also encouraged to
apply.

In addition to developing a strong research program, the successful
candidate will be involved in the teaching and research activities of
the Master of Science in Sustainable Management (MScSM) program, which
is an innovative program that attracts students with backgrounds in
management, social science and the sciences. The MScSM program is unique
among science and management graduate programs by providing a strong
foundation in sustainability management while offering an opportunity to
specialize in a management or science stream
(http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/mscsm/).

The appointment will be at UTM, which has a strong interdisciplinary
commitment to teaching and research, a multicultural student body of
12,000 students, and a modern, spacious campus, where the appointee will
be expected to develop an externally funded research program. The
successful candidate will also hold a graduate faculty appointment in
the tri-campus Department of Geography and Program in Planning at the
University of Toronto, a department with strengths and interdisciplinary
linkages in physical and human geography and the environment. Active
participation in the UTM Geography and Environment undergraduate
programs, as well as in the graduate program of the Department of
Geography and Program in Planning is expected.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply by clicking on the link :
https://utoronto.taleo.net/careersection/10050/jobdetail.ftl?job=1301727. Applications

should include a curriculum vitae, a statement outlining current and
future research interests, examples of publications, and materials
relevant to teaching experience. All materials must be received by
January 31, 2014 (no email applications will be accepted). Any inquiries
about the application should be sent to the Department Chair, Professor
Kathi Wilson, at geography.utm@utoronto.ca
<mailto:geography.utm@utoronto.ca>. All application materials should be
submitted online. The UofT application system can accommodate up to five
attachments (10 MB) per candidate profile; please combine attachments
into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. Submission guidelines can
be found at: http://uoft.me/how-to-apply.

Applicants should also ask three referees to send letters directly to
the Department via email geography.utm@utoronto.ca
<mailto:geography.utm@utoronto.ca> by the closing date.

Additional information on the Department can be obtained online at
www.utm.utoronto.ca/geography <http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/geography> ?

The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its
community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority
group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities,
members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the
further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are
encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be
given priority.
