AMV Support Engineer based at EUMETSAT, Darmstadt, Germany
HAMTEC Consulting a provider of quality staff to the aerospace industry.
We are currently seeking a University degree or comparable qualifications in
Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics or related subjects, the Key person shall
have a minimum of three years' experience of processing satellite or
meteorological data.
Location: Darmstadt, Germany
Start Date: April 2014
Closing date: 28 December 2013
TASKS:
The tasks of the Candidate will include:
* Algorithm software anomaly investigation and correction;
* Design and implementation of algorithm enhancements or improvements;
* Software feasibility analyses of proposed new product algorithms, or
major algorithm upgrades;
* Development of tools in support of product monitoring and product
analysis, for example as part of MSG MPEF product validation testing;
* Preparation of technical documents on product implementation issues;
* Preparation of technical notes and reports as required;
* Attendance at technical and RSP/AIA team meetings as required;
The focus of these tasks will primarily be on the AMV products extracted
from both geostationary and polar orbit systems; however, there may tasks
related to other products for which the work of the key person may be
partially allocated
Qualifications and Experience
* a University degree or comparable qualifications in Meteorology,
Atmospheric Physics or related subjects;
* A minimum of three years' experience of processing satellite or
meteorological data
Essential Skills
* Proven experience in the design, implementation, and testing of
complex scientific algorithm software;
* Proven experience of software development in C and Fortran in a UNIX
environment;
* Proven experience in software development using data visualisation
and analysis tools (e.g. IDL);
* Experience in configuration control of software and data;
* Sound knowledge and experience in the area of Atmospheric Motion
Vectors extraction from satellite imagery, or experience with image
processing algorithms in the area of feature identification and tracking
would be a distinct advantage.
Desirable Skills
* Experience in operational data processing

Responsibilities:
Swings in agriculture production are keys for commodities markets, and
are directly linked to weather. The team wants to follow and forecast
it, so main tasks will be:
* Maintaining existing crop production models and quantitative
studies
* Developing and implementing new models to support the Research
team. Improving and challenging methodologies.
* Implementing Remote Sensing tools / studies, as the team wants
to dig on these topics
* Realize on-the-job studies, depending on the market needs
* Complete adhoc projects as directed by the Head of the team
Person specification:
* High education in Meteorology required: MSc or PhD, with
excellent quantitative knowledge (statistics, time series ...). Good
knowledge of statistics and their application in weather forecasting
* Candidates will be 0-2 years of experience, recent graduates
are encouraged to apply
* Fluent English is mandatory, others languages are an asset
* Strong programming / development skills. Languages used
internally: VBA, Matlab
* Strong knowledge of GIS tools (Quantum GIS ...)
* Source of ideas proposals
* Communication skills with the ability to explain detailed
technical information in a clear and concise manner, to a variety of
audience
* Flexible and very dynamic approach with good interpersonal
skills
* Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects at all
times
* Ability to work under pressure

Applications are invited for a PhD Scholarship at Monash University,
Melbourne, Australia, to work on the dynamics and modelling of Southern
Hemisphere midlatitude cyclones. The successful applicant may have the
opportunity to participate in a Southern Ocean observational field campaign.
This project would have links to the Australian Research Council Centre of
Excellence (CoE) for Climate System Science http://www.climatescience.org.au,
which provides opportunities for travel and graduate student development.
The successful applicant must have the equivalent of an Australian first
class honours degree in atmospheric science, mathematics, physics or
engineering. The scholarship is open to both Australian and non-Australian
students and is funded at the rate of the Australian Postgraduate Award
(currently $25392 per annum).
