In the framework of the young investigators group ?The effect of
deformation mechanisms for ice sheet dynamics?, the Eberhard Karls
University T?bingen, Department of Geosciences, and the Alfred Wegener
Institute, section Glaciology offers one

PhD position in glaciology/structural geology (microstructure of ice)

to commence early 2014.

Our group aims to improve the understanding of dynamic processes of
polar ice sheets with respect to prognosis of sea level evolution. The
overall goal of our project is to obtain a physical basis for a flow law
for ice, derived from the micro-physical processes observed via
microstructure investigations. The PhD project shall support this by
simulating and evaluating deformation mechanisms of ice using the
comprehensive micro-structure modelling platform ELLE. This specific
projects aims to provide better insight in the entrapment of air in ice,
which is where palaeo-atmosphere is recorded in polar ice sheets.

Tasks: The main focus of the successful candidate will be to model ice
and firn microstructural processes with recently developed and combined
numerical codes to simulate the complex interplay of recrystallisation
and highly heterogeneous crystal-plastic deformation, using a full-field
approach, incorporating the complex composite ice-air. The numerical
simulations shall be combined with analyses on natural ice sample, in
order to constrain the relative contributions of the numerous operating
processes and their impact on microstructure and mechanical properties
of ice and firn.

Prerequisites: The candidate should possess proven expertise and a
master (or equivalent) in the field of geosciences, physics, materials
science, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines. Well-founded
knowledge of basic physics and geoscience is required. Additionally,
previous experience in microstructure analysis or and computer modelling
is an asset. A distinct interest in the scientific exchange and
communication within the group members and interdisciplinary
collaborators, especially with geophysicists, physicists and
climatologists is expected. The candidate should have good language
skills in oral and written English, since the working group is composed
of international fellow researchers and the research results will be
published in internationally.

This is a temporary position limited to 3 years. The compensation is in
compliance with the TV-L E13 67% Salary.
We further offer the possibility to participate in Arctic and/or
Antarctic glaciological expeditions.
The University aims to increase the percentage of female employees in
its scientific departments. Therefore, we encourage qualified female
scientists to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be given
preference when equally qualified.

Please forward your applications with the standard documentation
(resume, photograph, credentials and activity reports) and contact
details of two references by Email (all documents attached as one
pdf-file) to:<Ilka.Weikusat@awi.de>. Deadline for applications is
January 2nd.

Dear All

We seek a PhD candidate for a project called /Disentangling drivers of
change in terrestrial primary production (SATGUESS)./ The project is a
cooperation between Lund University and Copenhagen University and the
successful applicant will receive a PhD degree from both Universities (a
so called double degree).

Job assignments

The overall aim of this project is to explore the combined use of remote
sensing time series and biogeochemical vegetation modelling for
quantification of effects on the carbon cycle (stocks and fluxes) from
environmental changes. Focus will be on changes in land use, land cover,
climate and atmospheric CO2 concentration. Combining the high spatial
and temporal resolution of remotely sensed observations with the
mechanistic process representation of a biogeochemical vegetation model
(LPJ-GUESS), can provide insight into the performance of both model
outputs and temporal consistency of remote sensing time series. The
combined use will also enable an improved basis for understanding how
climatic/anthropogenic drivers influence past, current and future
properties of the terrestrial carbon cycle.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

The successful candidate should have a strong background in remote
sensing of vegetation including handling large data sets and multi
sensor data sets. Technical skills in image processing and data handling
(i.e. script based analysis) is considered an advantage.
The candidate should have experience with ecosystem modelling and a
programming language, preferable C++. Knowledge of MATLAB and high
performance computing is of advantage. Experience from LPJ-GUESS or
similar models are an advantage.

Though the technical skills are important for a successful application,
as the main focus of this study is to generate an improved basis for our
understanding of the investigated environmental systems, an ecological /
biological / plant physiological background is obligatory. Hence an MSc
(or equivalent) in environmental science, physical geography,
geoscience, plant ecology or similar is required.

The Institute for Coastal Research of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht
(Germany) invites applications for a 3 year Ph.D. position

Ph.D. position (m/f)

code no. 2013/KS 3

starting April 1st, 2014, as part of the European Initial Training
Network ARAMACC Annually-resolved archives of marine climate change -
development of molluscan sclerochronology for marine environmental
monitoring and climatology, a collaboration between nine
internationally-renowned research teams in UK, Germany, Norway, Croatia,
France, Netherlands and Portugal <aramacc.com> . The overall objectives
of the project are the construction of a network of shell-based
chronologies over the past few centuries for the climatically important
North East Atlantic region and understand their decadal and mutidecadal
variations with the help of their joint analysis of millennial climate
simulations with global atmosphere-ocean models.

This position is based at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht. The
successful candidate will analyse climate simulations over the past
millennium belonging to the Climate Model Intercomparison Project, and
are already available. The focus of the analysis will lie in the decadal
and multidecadal variability in the North Atlantic region with special
emphasis on the ocean circulation and the coupling between the
atmosphere and the ocean. One main objective will be to compare these
climate simulations with the information provided by the molluscan
chronologies, assess the level of coherence between models and
reconstructions and help mechanistically explain the variability
observed in the chronologies.

The successful candidate ideally holds a degree in oceanography,
meteorology, physics, environmental sciences, and is familiar with the
statistical analysis of large climate data sets, in particular of ocean
simulations. Some familiarity with software tools, such as R,
Mathematica, Matlab or Fortran is an advantage. Experience with
Linux/Unix computer environments is required. A genuine interest in
areas beyond climate modelling is highly desirable, such as the
interpretation of climate proxy records. Very good command of English,
written and spoken, is required.

For this position the EU mobility rules apply. At the time of
recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided
or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country
of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years
immediately prior to the reference date.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is an equal opportunity employer for
women, minorities, and people with disabilities, and strives to increase
the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons
with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially.

Please, send your application as single pdf-file (!) including a short
letter of motivation, CV, and list of publications indicating job offer
code no. 2013/KS 3 to our human resources <personal@hzg.de> and to
<eduardo.zorita@hzg.de>

Application period from November 12th, 2013 to January 15th, 2014

The Atmospheric Sciences group in the College of Earth, Ocean, and
Atmospheric Sciences is recruiting a PhD
student for a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) beginning in the
fall of 2014. A GRA position provides a monthly salary, a full tuition
waiver, and subsidized insurance.

Funded by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), the
project involves scientists with expertise in climate, forest ecology,
and economics. The goal is to quantify and understand the complex
nonlinear interactions of coupled human and natural systems, with a
focus on biophysical, biogeochemical, and economic interactions in
western forested ecosystems. We will model and predict large-scale tree
mortality resulting from warming, drought, bark beetles, forest
management, and the interactions among these factors.

The role of this GRA position will be to analyze the data from a
crowd-sourced climate modeling experiment in the climateprediction.net
family. A regional atmospheric model will be coupled with a vegetation
model to examine nonlinear behavior, and the GRA will learn to write
code in a high-level programming environment like IDL or matlab in order
to perform scientific analysis.

Strong written, verbal, and quantitative skills are essential, and the
candidate must meet entrance requirements for Atmospheric Sciences; some
programming experience is preferred. The successful candidate will be
expected to work independently and collaboratively as an active member
of an interdisciplinary research group.

For full consideration, interested students should apply to the Ocean,
Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences major within the CEOAS graduate program.
Applications are due no later than January 5, 2014. Information on the
application process can be found at
<http://ceoas.oregonstate.edu/future/apply/oeas/>.

Questions about this opportunity can be emailed to Dr. Philip Mote,
<pmote@coas.oregonstate.edu>. In-person meetings can be arranged for
students attending the American Geophysical Union meeting in San
Francisco, December, 9-13, 2013.
