A PhD studentship (open to EU and UK applicants, start data March 2014) and a postdoctoral research associate will be available in the Earth Observation Science (EOS) group at University of Leicester.
The PhD student and the research associate will work on the retrieval of greenhouse gases CO2 and CH4 from the GOSAT satellite and the upcoming NASA OCO-2 satellite.
Both posts are funded by the ESA Climate Change Initiative (GHG-CCI) phase 2 and they will start in early (March) 2014. The research associate post is for 2 years initially.

The Remote Sensing Technology Institute at the German Aerospace Center
(DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany,
has an open position for a Doctoral Fellow.
The doctoral student will address the development and refinement of
novel scientific algorithms for the retrieval of
aerosol and trace gases from measurements of the MAX-DOAS spectrometer
at the Environmental Research Station
Schneefernerhaus. The work is carried out in close cooperation with
national and international partners. We offer an
excellent research environment, and provide the opportunity to
collaborate with leading scientists in the field of
ground- and satellite-based atmospheric remote sensing.

The University of Tr?s-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) opens a call to attribute one Post-doc research fellowship (BPD) within the framework of project entitled Mid-Latitude North Atlantic Extreme Storms Variability: Diagnosis, Modelling Dynamical Processes and Related Impacts on Iberia (STORMEx) (PTDC/AAC-CLI/121339/2010; COMPETE reference: FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-019524), funded by FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC), and co-funded by FEDER, under the following terms:
Scientific Area: Earth and Atmosphere Sciences
Academic background and skills required:
The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Engineering or similar, with solid knowledge and experience in Climate Dynamics, Diagnosis, Modelling of Dynamical Processes and/or analysis and risk assessment and impacts of large scale circulation in climate at the regional scale. We seek preferably individuals with strong background handling large-scale patterns (e.g. ENSO, NAO, PNA, etc), synoptic scale features (e.g. blockings, cut-off lows, storm-tracks) and experience on mesoscale modelling. Good programming skills in FORTRAN and MATLAB are required. It is an advantage to have knowledge on Extreme Value Theory and a high level of familiarization handling large datasets (e.g. ERA40, NCEP/NCAR or ERA-Interim) as well as output from GCMs. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is essential.
Working plan:
The main purpose of this fellowship is to assist the team achieving the deliverables defined in the STORMEx project (Mid-Latitude North Atlantic Extreme Storms Variability: Diagnosis, Modelling Dynamical Processes and Related Impacts on Iberia). Thus the candidate will participate in the evaluation of extratropical North Atlantic cyclones in the mid-latitude climate, including its detailed structure and role in moisture transport, and to assess its linkages with extreme events (precipitation and wind) over the Iberia, throughout the last century and in future IPCC scenarios. These will be achieved by performing mesoscale modelling of historic events as well as using simulations from state-of-the-art GCMs. The candidate will also contribute to determine how extreme storms and extreme impacts are associated in Iberia and whether this association will be more prone to occur under different climate states, as well as to conduct risk assessment of meteorological hazards and adverse impacts over western Iberia.
Applications should be submitted by 20-01-2014.
