postgraduate students.
The aim of the Summer School is to offer an in-depth view of the impacts
of climate change in the Mediterranean Basin and to pursue a thorough
investigation of key adaptation policies and best practices, whether not

School programme will combine physical, economic, and socio-political
aspects of the Mediterranean in an interdisciplinary approach for the
purpose of educating the public about the impacts of climate change.
Students will also benefit from an overview of the technical instruments
that enable a better understanding of the statistical models for impact
and adaptation analysis. The Summer School topics will include: climate
systems and impacts in the Mediterranean basin, integrated assessment of
climate change impacts, and adaptation strategies in the Mediterranean
region: case studies, options and best adaptation practices.
The Summer School will take place from May 19th to May 23rd, 2014 at the
ICCG and CMCC (CIP Division) offices on the Island of San Giorgio
Maggiore, in Venice, located just in front of St. Mark?s Square.
ADMISSION
The School offers a specialised study programme for doctoral and
post-doctoral students from all over the world in environmental and

This two-year position will augment and complement existing departmental
strengths in geospatial analysis and GIS, watershed and river
restoration, biometeorology, climate prediction and impacts, political
ecology, and water resources policy. The successful applicant will
contribute intellectually to the department and College by conducting
interdisciplinary research while also teaching two courses per year.
A doctoral degree in a relevant field must be completed by the start
date of fellowship, September 2014. To apply please upload a cover
letter, research plan (not to exceed two pages), curriculum vitae, names

Apologies for cross-posting
The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) located in
Potsdam, Germany is seeking to fill three temporary positions
1 Post-doc and 2 PhD student positions
to strengthen our team for the project Greenland glacial system and
future sea-level rise funded by the Leibniz Association and coordinated
by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
Ref. GR-SAW-Postdoc: The post-doc will work on coupling of individual
components of the Greenland glacial system, which includes a 3-D
Greenland ice sheet model, a set of generic one-dimensional outlet
glaciers-fjord models and a regional climate model of intermediate
complexity. The study will include validation of the developed model
using observational data and performing of future climate change
simulations.
Ref. GR-SAW-PhD1: The PhD student will work on modelling of the
Greenland outlet glaciers and their interaction with the ocean in the
fjords. The work will include coupling of a fjord model with a
one-dimensional outlet-glacier model through water and heat fluxes. The
model has to be verified against observational data and a comprehensive
3-D model.
Ref. GR-SAW-PhD2: This PhD student will improve the basal hydrology of
an existing ice sheet model to enable representation of fast ice flow.
The task is to derive a concept and implementation for the transition of
the basal hydrologic system between different regimes. The impact of
these regimes on basal sliding will be investigated for the Greenland
ice sheet. This is a joint project with Alfred Wegener Institute
Helmholtz Centre for Polar Marine Research (AWI), Bremerhaven. The PhD
student will be co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Angelika Humbert and should
be prepared to spend substantial time in Bremerhaven.
General requirements: Programming skills in a higher programming
language, preferably FORTRAN, are required. Ability to work in a team
and to communicate with other researchers is crucial for this project.
The main working language is English.
Requirements for the PhD students: Applicants need a completed MSc (or
equivalent) degree in physics, geophysics, geoscience, mathematics or
computer science. Experience in numerical modelling would be of advantage.
Requirements for the post-doc: Applicants need a recent PhD (doctorate)
in physics, geophysics, geoscience, applied mathematics or computer
science. Experience in numerical modelling is required; preferably, in
fields related to climate or environmental sciences.
Applications should include:
- Cover letter
- CV
- Copies of relevant degree certificates
- List of publications for the post-doc
- The names and contact information of one reference for the PhD
students and of two references for the post-doc
PIK seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are
underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
Applications of disabled persons with equal qualifications will be
favourably regarded.
The doctorates will run for three years. The post-doc will receive an
initial 2 years contract with the possibility of 1 year extension. The
payment is in accordance with the TV-L salary scale E13 for the post-doc
and E13 (65%) for the PhD students.
The start is as soon as possible. Applications will be evaluated on an
ongoing basis until the position is filled.
We are looking forward to receiving your application with mail or email
(with max 5 MB of attachments). Please understand that we can only
return documents that are sent by mail, if you enclose a self-addressed
stamped envelope.
All applications should be sent to
