Title: Regional modeling of cloud-aerosols interactions in
southern West Africa
The University Pierre et Marie Curie and the Institut
Pierre-Simon Laplace offer a 2-year post-doctoral position to
work on modeling of cloud-aerosols interactions at regional scale
in Southern West Africa. The position is funded through the
European FP7 project DACCIWA (Dynamics-Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud
Interactions in West Africa).
Context:
The main objectives of DACCIWA are a comprehensive assessment of
the atmospheric composition of the region, impacts on human and
ecosystem health, the two-way coupling between aerosols, clouds
and precipitation, key meteorological processes, impacts on
radiative forcing and the regional scale circulation, and
socio-economic implications of changes in anthropogenic
emissions, land use and climate.
The DACCIWA project proposes a major field campaign in southern
West Africa involving three European research aircrafts, two
super-sites, new space observations and numerical models
operating at different resolutions and levels of complexity in
order to generate a benchmark dataset that comprises the full
chain of processes from surface-based emissions to climate
impacts. West Africa is ideal for such a study due to its rich
mix of aerosols and clouds, its rapid population and economic
growth, and its strong dependence on the notoriously difficult to
predict West African monsoon.
Description of work:
The first objective of the work to be conducted is to evaluate
the capability of the CHIMERE1 model to reproduce the complex
summertime chemical landscape in the Southern West Africa,
between the Gulf of Guinea and ~12?N, from the background state
over the Gulf of Guinea (marine aerosols or mix between marine
aerosols and biomass burning aerosols from Central Africa) to the
coastal strip of polluted cities/megacities
(Abdijan-Accra-Lome-Cotonou-Lagos) to the agricultural areas
further north to the forest areas. Dust aerosols transported from
the Sahel or remote Sahara are also expected to contribute to the
overall complexity of the chemical panorama. Modelled emissions
(marine ? anthropogenic- soil ? biogenic - dust) and
concentration fields will be evaluated against airborne
measurements made during the three-week aircraft campaign in
Africa in June/July 2015.
A second objective of the work will be dedicated the validation
of modeled cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) properties
(concentration, size-distribution, etc?) in southern West Africa
as a function of pollution and meteorological conditions, using
the airborne data.
A third objective will be to analyze of the retroactions between
anthropogenic, biomass burning and mineral dust aerosols and the
life cycle of clouds in the Gulf of Guinea region, from nocturnal
stratus to low Sc clouds to the formation of congestus Cu clouds
in the afternoon.
The candidate will run simulations with both the WRF and
CHIMERE models. He/she also will contribute to the development of
the CHIMERE model through the improvement of the on-line coupling
techniques currently designed in the CHIMERE team.
Supervision team: The work will be conducted under the main
supervision of Laurent Menut from LMD2 and Cyrille Flamant from
LATMOS3. The work will be performed in Laboratoire de
M?t?orologie Dynamique (LMD), Ecole Polytechnique, 91128
Palaiseau Cedex ? France
Experience: The applicant should have a PhD in environmental
sciences or similar experience. He/she will have experience with
numerical modeling of the Earth system based on global or
regional model. He/she also have experience with handling large
datasets. Knowledge in computer programming (Shell, Unix,
Fortran, awk) is highly desirable. The applicant publication
record should show a majority of papers published in English in
top ranking journals.
Duration and salary: The post-doctorate will be recruited for 24
months with a net monthly salary around 2000 euros, commensurate
with experience. This includes social services and health insurance.
Contact for applications: Applications should include a CV (with
a list of peer-reviewed publications), a statement of research
interests and the names of at least two references including
e-mail addresses and telephone numbers.
Applications should be submitted by e-mail to Cyrille Flamant
(cyrille.flamant@latmos.ipsl.fr) and Laurent Menut
(menut@lmd.polytechnique.fr) before 31 March 2014.
