PostDoc position in chemistry-climate modeling

PMOD/WRC is offering a PostDoc position within the project ?Study of
factors influencing ozone layer evolution (SILA)? funded by the Swiss
National Science Foundation. The main goal of this project is to study
the ozone layer behavior during the recent decade and define the
spectral solar irradiance dataset which gives the best agreement between
the simulated and measured data. We will also analyze the causes of a
strong ozone increase observed in August 2004, the anomalous Arctic
ozone decrease during winter 2011, and the ozone depletion after the
major Sudden Stratospheric Warming in January 2009. PostDoc will apply
the chemistry-climate model SOCOL to simulate the climate and ozone
layer behavior, analyze the results, compare them with observations and
prepare publications.

The candidate should hold PhD in physics, mathematics, environmental,
earth sciences or engineering. The candidate should further have deep
interest in the modeling of physical or chemical processes in the
atmosphere at all scales or some experience in numerical climate and
chemistry modeling. Good knowledge of mathematical fundamentals,
FORTRAN-95, Unix Shell-scripting, IDL or other visualization packages
will be required.Fluency in English is essential.

The position should be filled by July 2014. The project duration is 1
year. Please send your application including a statement of interest,
transcripts, CV, publication list, and contact information of at least
two referees (preferably as a single pdf-file) to Eugene Rozanov by
email (e.rozanov@pmodwrc.ch <mailto:e.rozanov@pmodwrc.ch>). For informal
enquiries concerning this position, please, contact Dr. Eugene Rozanov
(+41 81 4175135). The review of applications will start in April 2014.

Center for Climate and Global Change, University of Graz, Austria

Field of work: The ReLoClim Research Group (<www.wegcenter.at/reloclim>)
of the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change focuses on climate
processes and climate change on regional and local scales, develops
regional climate scenarios, and investigates the impacts of climate
change in the framework of national and inter-national projects. We are
searching a highly motivated member (Post Doc) of our research team, who
will get the opportunity to develop her/his research ideas in the field
of empirical-statistical downscaling and bias correction and, more
generally, in the interface between climate modelling and climate change
impact research. He/she will work in close cooperation with dynamical
climate modellers within the research group. Initial funding is provided
by two projects for 18 months, one focusing on convective extreme
precipitation events and their representation in convection permitting
regional climate models, the other on the effect of weather conditions
on winter mortality of honey bees. The successful candidate will be
strongly supported in developing a longer term research strategy within
the Wegener Center and get the opportunity to build up a small research
team, depending on the success of project applications.

Job profile: Position: Post Doc position, full time (40 hours/week),
position can be filled as soon as possible. Gross salary: ? 3.483,30
gross/month (14 times per year). Duration: Initially for 1.5 years with
the aim for extension. Requested knowledge and skills:

- PhD Degree in natural sciences (e.g. meteorology, physics, geophysics,
mathematics, geography), ideally with emphasis on
meteorology/climatology/statistics
- Experience in the application of statistical methods in climate
sciences. In particular, experience in model output statistics (MOS),
bias correction, and statistical downscaling are welcome.
- Experience in programming (ideally R, IDL, FORTRAN)
- Analytical orientation, independent work style, organizing abilities
- Ideally experience in, but at least the aim to lead a small research
team and to acquire projects.
- Very good command of English

Further information can be obtained from Dr. Andreas Gobiet
(<andreas.gobiet@uni-graz.at>). If you are interested please send your
application (Letter of Application, CV, suitable inserts) per e-mail to
