NERC studentship for October 2014 in association with Jesus College, Oxford
Atmospheric drivers of European drought events
Supervisors: Tim Woollings (AOPP, University of Oxford), Brian Hoskins
and Mike Blackburn (University of Reading) and Adam Scaife (Met Office)
Persistent atmospheric circulation patterns such as blocking
anticyclones are essential ingredients of European droughts. There is
evidence that remote forcing factors could contribute to the persistence
of these events. Potential candidates for this forcing include Rossby
wave forcing from the tropics, anomalous ocean temperatures, sea ice
coverage, stratospheric temperatures and local surface feedbacks. If any
of these factors do influence the atmospheric circulation over Europe
there is potential for improved predictability of European drought events.
The project will begin by analyzing observational data for selected
persistent circulation cases. Then the student will perform simulations
of these events using a simple dynamical circulation model constrained
to follow the observed flow in particular regions. These simulations
will aim to attribute causality to particular forcings and could be used
to test factors such as the sensitivity to model background state and
the importance of resolution. Both of these factors are relevant to
interpreting the skill of forecast systems to capture the response to
forcing.
This studentship is part of a new research project on drought bringing
together scientists from several universities and institutions. Close
interaction within this team is envisaged, and the project has a
co-supervisor from the Met Office as it is hoped that the results of the
project will be of real benefit to operational forecasting. This
studentship will be affiliated with the newly founded Oxford Doctoral
Training Programme in Environmental Research
<http://www.environmental-research.ox.ac.uk/>.
Eligibility: Full funding (for 4 years) is available for UK/EU students
who have been resident in the UK for the last three years. Other EU
candidates are eligible for a fees-only award. A strong maths or physics
background is required, and some experience of computer programming is
desirable.
Deadline for application: 23 April 2014. Interviews will be held on 7
May 2014.
Further information:
Please email any questions about the project to Dr Tim Woollings
(woollings@atm.ox.ac.uk <mailto:woollings@atm.ox.ac.uk>).
