*Fully-funded NERC industrial CASE PhD studentship at the University of
Edinburgh starting September 2014*

*CASE partner: UK Met Office, Hadley Centre*

*"Impacts of climate change and emissions on atmospheric composition and
on air pollution" *

/Supervisors: Ruth Doherty and Mat Heal (Schools of Geosciences and
Chemistry, University of Edinburgh), Fiona O' Connor and Gerd Folberth
(Met Office, Hadley Centre), Graham Mann (University of Leeds)
/

Summary: Air pollution is the environmental factor with the greatest
impact on human health in Europe. Yet, understanding the distribution of
these air pollutants is complex: they are largely produced by
interacting chemical reactions within the atmosphere rather than being
directly emitted, there are multiple anthropogenic and natural sources
of the precursors, and all these processes are influenced by atmospheric
and land-surface conditions and meteorological transport. Thus, as
climate changes, atmospheric composition will be affected.

The aim of this project is to use the UK Chemistry and Aerosol (UKCA)
community model under present-day and future to compare the impacts of
climate and emission change on atmospheric composition, and determine
the key drivers of change. Key questions may include: what is the
contribution of local emissions versus regionally-transported pollution
to air pollution? Which constituents of PM are most dominant during air
pollution episodes now and in the future?Which key transport and
chemistry processes associated with regional climate change drive
changes in atmospheric composition and air quality exceedances?

CASE partner: The student will have the opportunity to spend time at the
UK Met Office during the project. The Met Office also provides extra
funding additional to the NERC student stipend.
