The Oregon Climate Change Research Institute at OSU offers summer
internships for up to three students in Corvallis.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

(1) Next-generation scenarios of future climate from a regional
superensemble

Undergraduate students with a strong background in meteorology,
atmospheric sciences, or climatology with some preparation in statistics
or computer programming are encouraged to apply for a summer internship
at Oregon State University, funded and administered through the REACCH
(Regional Approaches to Climate Change for Pacific Northwest
Agriculture) project. This project makes use of a superensemble
(>140,000 one-year simulations) of 25km resolution regional modeling
over the western US. Students involved in this project will join a team
of people running the regCPDN who use and modify existing computer code
to aggregate and examine certain aspects of the superensemble. REU
students will gain first-hand knowledge of climate modeling, both at the
global and regional scale, computer programming, and working within an
interdisciplinary team. The internship pays $500 per week in addition to
housing and other benefits. Period of internship is June 16 - August 15.

Some experience programming is required; IDL, matlab, or R preferred.
For details see

<https://www.reacchpna.org/mission/education/undergraduate/summer-research-internship-application/>

Note that applications are no longer being accepted via this web site.
To apply, send resume, letter of interest, statement of computer
programming experience, 3 references, and transcript to

Philip Mote
<pmote@coas.oregonstate.edu>
Applications are due April 25.

-------------------------------------------------------------
(2)
The other two positions will collect tree trait data for earth system
modeling. They will learn how to core trees and read cores properly,
measure tree and crown height with lasers, measure leaf area with
optical sensors, and make other forest measurements. They will also
analyze and format the data according to our protocols developed for the
AmeriFlux network, Fluxnet, and the U.N. Global Terrestrial Observing
System- Terrestrial Carbon Observations.
Expected qualifications: use of excel for data entry and simple
equations. Desired: Field experience making tree measurements and using
field instruments like the LAI-2000. To apply, send CV and letter of
interest to

Post-doctoral fellowships:
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology seeks applications for competitively awarded postdoctoral fellowships from highly qualified candidates specialized in the areas of ocean physics, ecosystem modeling and statistics. We are seeking up to two postdoctoral fellows to work on the JST funded project entitled ?Novel technologies to evaluate multi-scale variations of pelagic marine communities and biodiversity under the influence of the Kuroshio and internal waves in coastal habitats?.

A brief summary of this project:
Ecological processes driven by environmental forcing occur over multiple space and time scales.?This project focuses on characterizing multi-scale biodiversity dynamics in the Kuroshio affected habitats using a novel approach that will combine numerical models with field observations obtained using advanced sensing technologies. The intended methodology of the project is to use the observed data with numerical methods to produce a new planktonic ecosystem model. In conjunction with this model development, a scheme will be developed to predict the dynamics and biodiversity of both phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Candidates can choose from among the following tasks:
1) Three dimensional ocean modeling using ROMS and SUNTAN
2) A new ecosystem model development for NPZ
3) Biodiversity statistical data analysis

All the necessary data will be provided by a new Cabled observatory and a new AUV monitoring system. The Cabled observatory will be located in Oshima Island; south of Tokyo bay.

Applicants are asked to submit electronically:
(1) a curriculum vitae,
(2) a publication list,
(3) a brief research background and
(4) the names of three individuals who can provide a letter of reference.
The initial deadline is June 30, 2014. The application package should be send to Prof. Yamazaki (hide@kaiyodai.ac.jp). The starting date is July 1, 2014 (negotiable) and the positions are renewable every year depending on performance up to three years.

PhD NERC Industrial Case Studentship: Urban gust estimates for insurance portfolio loss<http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/pg-research/Grimmond_CASE.pdf>. Fully funded (including maintenance grant and university fees) - from October 2014 - see NERC website for eligibility. Please contact Sue Grimmond (c.s.grimmond@reading.ac.uk) in the first instance: Decisions will be made on a rolling basis.

This project will revisit the methodology used by a risk analysis company to calculating roughness of cities and gust correction factors to improve wind hazard assessments. This will draw on new characterisations of urban land cover and surface roughness and re-analysis of an extensive database of gust observations in urban areas across the world. Updates to the current modelling framework, for use in an operational setting, will be proposed.
Spend time in London (RMS) and Reading (Department of Meteorology, University of Reading UK)
