For a research project at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research - Troposphere, IEK-8, we are seeking a
PhD student (Chemistry, Physics, Meteorology or equivalent degree)
for a 3 year position starting in summer 2014.
"Modeling ozone in the Mediterranean region"
Current global chemistry climate models and regional air quality models show large biases in their simulations of tropospheric ozone in the Mediterranean region with a tendency to overestimate surface ozone concentrations. We would like to investigate the underlying causes for these modeling biases and, in a second step, use an improved model to assess the climate chemistry interactions related to tropospheric ozone in the Mediterranean region. The work will involve a careful statistical analysis of available data sets from field campaigns and monitoring stations, the interpretation of numerical model results from ongoing international projects, and the set-up and execution of high-resolution sensitivity simulations with the chemistry climate model ECHAM6-HAMMOZ.
With 4400 staff members Forschungszentrum J?lich is the largest interdisciplinary research center in Germany focusing its research in the fields of health, environment and energy, and information technology. At IEK-8 simulation chamber experiments, experimental field studies, and model calculations are used to investigate the processes that control the chemical transformation and spatial distribution of trace compounds, and their ultimate removal from the atmosphere. About 60 scientists, engineers, technicians and doctoral students are currently working at the institute in the field of atmospheric chemistry.
The research group "Global Modeling" of IEK-8 develops and runs a comprehensive global model for atmospheric chemistry, aerosols and climate and investigates the feedbacks between air pollution and climate change. The group is involved in various international research activities and collaborates with various partner institutes in Germany and elsewhere. Other group activities include the coordination of a sub project within the Copernicus atmospheric service (MACC) and leadership of WMO Global Atmosphere Watch scientific advisory group on reactive gases. Contributions to such group activities would be appreciated.
Your profile
You are a curious mind with an above-average master degree or equivalent in physics, meteorology, chemistry, or mathematics. You acquired at least a basic knowledge of atmospheric chemistry and you show excellent programming skills. Ideally, you have already gained experience with the analysis of complex data sets. Your command of the English language enables you to read, write, and communicate with international scientists. You like to work in an interdisciplinary team. You can structure your work and work independently.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist Position in Climate Dynamics at Duke
University
The Division of Earth and Ocean Sciences of Duke University invites
applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in the area
of subtropical climate, climate dynamics and climate change. The
successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr. Wenhong Li.
The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. degree in climate science
or a related field by the time of employment. The ideal candidate should
be skilled with numerical modeling and quantitative analysis of models
and observational data. Appointments will be for one year; renewal
beyond one year is contingent on performance and funding availability.
