The research group for Climatology, Climate Dynamics and Climate Change (Prof. Juerg Luterbacher), Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Geography, University of Giessen, Germany, invites applications for a
fixed term (3 years plus 3 years) Assistant Professor position (Akademischer Rat auf Zeit A13) in 'Weather, Climate Extremes and Impacts' OR 'Paleoclimatology of the last 2000 years' OR 'Renewable Energy'
as of October 2014
Reference is made to ? 65 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HHG).
Duties: Research, teaching, administrative and management activities
Research can include the following three possible foci:
- Statistical and dynamical analysis of weather and climate extremes in observations and climate models related impact studies. Collaboration within the new LOEWE Large Scale Integrated Programm (Excellency in research for the future of Hesse 'FACE2FACE - Folgen des Klimawandels, Anpassung an den Klimawandel und Verminderung der Treibhausgas-Emissionen bis 2050; <http://www.proloewe.de/face2face>) is expected.
- Paleoclimatology of the last 2000 years, statistical and dynamical studies in close collaboration within national projects and the PAGES2k initiative
- Research in the field of renewables
Teaching: The incumbent is expected to teach statistics for geographers at the Bachelor and Master level (preferably in German language) and other climatology topics free to be chosen. In total 4h/per week teaching load within the semesters.
Duration: The appointment is initially for three years with the possibility of an extension of another three years and could lead to a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturer qualification).
Education: Candidates should have a PhD in natural sciences and strong programming and statistical background, handling large data sets, GIS, modelling are envisaged. Experience in project management and ability to work efficiently in an international team in multidisciplinary projects are essential. Experience in teaching, either in physical geography, climatology, meteorology or geostatistics. Applicants must provide evidence of high-quality research, very good publication record in peer-reviewed journals and a commitment to teaching. A motivated, well organized, creative and enthusiastic team-player who will contribute to the group's scientific success is much welcomed.

We have been shortlisted for an ADB project in Lao: "Service Contract for Support to the National Early Warning Center" The objectives of the assignment are: a) strengthen hydro-meteorological monitoring system in basin as well as national levels; b) build technical capability of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on forecasting of floods, droughts, extreme weather events and on seasonal climate prediction at basin and national levels. The project is it estimated to start in September 2014 and last 26 months.
We are looking for an expert to cover the position of Meteorologist (3 man/months) with the following requisites:
b. Meteorologist (Weather Forecast) (3 p-m international)
The Specialist will be a qualified meteorologist with preferably 15 years practical experience in: improvement of weather forecast system and operations; data processing and weather forecast model development; and preparation of training plan for weather forecast operations. Experience in the Mekong region and preferably in Lao PDR will be considered an asset. The candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and be fluent in oral and written English. Specifically the specialist will:
(i) Prepare a plan for improvements to weather forecast operations including the selection of appropriate weather forecast models and seasonal climate prediction models, and
(ii) Carry out training courses for the weather forecast and seasonal climate prediction models, operations and models calibration.
