There is a vacancy for a new professorship in boundary-layer meteorology
at the Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany). It is to be in close
collaboration with the German Weather Service (DWD) close by. Tenure
would come after a positive evaluation by the end of 2018. The
professorship is equipped with one research associate and two PhD
student positions by the end of 2018, in case of the positive evaluation
likely even until the end of 2022, and after that the research associate
position would be guaranteed by the university. Details below and attached.

***********************************************************************

The Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty
of Geosciences/Geography at Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt
in cooperation with the Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research at the
German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) invites applications for a

Professorship (W2) for "Boundary-Layer Meteorology"

The advertised professorship (initially limited until 31.12.2018, in the
case of positive evaluation and continuation of funding the position
could be converted to a permanent professorship) is combined with the
function of Head of the research area "Boundary-Layer Meteorology" at
the Hans-Ertel-Centre of the German Weather Service (Deutscher
Wetterdienst, DWD).

Structural goal of the Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research is the
formation of an internationally visible center of competence on central
fields of weather research and climate monitoring. For this purpose, it
is to generate a lasting network between DWD and leading weather
research in Germany, and to support the implementation of the medium-
and long-range strategy of DWD. These sustainable developments are to
ensure and strengthen university education in meteorology, and to
improve the development of personnel for weather research at DWD and
national research institutions. In support of these structural goals the
Hans-Ertel-Centre will be funded 2015-2018 by DWD, with a possible
extension until 2022. After this the funding of the research area will
have to be mainly based on external sources.

The prospective candidate should document internationally recognized
research experience in the theory and/or modelling of the atmosphere.
Expertise in boundary layer meteorology or numerical weather prediction
(in particular model development) would be advantageous. The candidate
is expected to play an active role as head of the research area
"Boundary-Layer Meteorology" in the research branch "Model Development"
of the Hans-Ertel-Centre. This implies close collaboration with other
research areas within the Hans-Ertel-Centre and DWD. The research should
cover current aspects of the theory and modeling of the atmospheric
boundary layer which are of relevance for an improved description of the
boundary layer in the atmospheric weather-forecast model of DWD. The
prospective candidate should contribute actively to the establishment
and sustenance of the Hans-Ertel-Centre as national network for
education and research on topics of relevance for numerical weather
prediction at DWD. This implies successful fund raising for research in
the Hans-Ertel-Centre. Collaboration with other research groups at the
university is desirable. It is expected that the Professor will be
involved in the BSc and MSc Meteorology and the MSc Environmental
Sciences curricula at Goethe-University; the teaching commitment is 8
contact hours per week. Furthermore, university/institutional
self-administration tasks form an integral part of the job description.

The place of employment is Frankfurt am Main. The designated salary for
the position is based on "W2" of the German university scale or
equivalent. For further information regarding the general conditions for
professorship appointments, please see:
www.vakante-professuren.uni-frankfurt.de.

Academics with an excellent record in research and teaching are invited
to submit their applications accompanied by the usual documents (CV,
references, publications list, 5 key publications, teaching experience,
research plan [max. 3 pages], overview of acquired external funding) in
electronic form (PDF) by 15.11.2014 to the Dean of the Department of
Geosciences/Geography, Goethe-University Frankfurt, Altenh?ferallee 1,
60438 Frankfurt am Main, Germany, e-mail:
dekanat-geowiss@em.uni-frankfurt.de.

Contact person for queries is Prof. Dr. Ulrich Achatz, e-mail:
