Post Doctoral Researcher in Physical Oceanography&Air-Sea Exchange (IRC161993)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Term: 3-years
Location: National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK
Salary: 26,715 to 30,000
To apply or more info: http://www.topcareer.jobs/Vacancy/irc161993_4782.aspx
Closing date: 5th November 2014
About the Role:
We are seeking a physical scientist to join the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate Research Group at the National Oceanography Centre. The post is a contribution to the UK Natural Environment Research Council's Research Program on the predictability of the South Asian Monsoon program, http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/funded/programmes/monsoon/.
The research will focus on the role of regional air-sea interaction and ocean heat and freshwater storage on monsoon variability. The work will require the assessment of the representation of Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal air-sea interaction in atmospheric reanalyses and in satellite observations. Ocean heat and freshwater budgets will be quantified using existing measurements supplemented with new measurements from ocean profiling floats, and the role of heat and freshwater storage and exchange on monsoon variability analysed.
About You:
Candidates should have a PhD, or equivalent research experience, in a physical science. Applications showing experience of monsoon physics, air-sea interaction, ocean heat budgets, physical oceanography or meteorology are particularly welcome, but such experience is not essential. The successful candidate will have strong numerical ability, show good physical understanding and have good communication skills. They will have the ability to conduct innovative research leading to high-impact publications in international refereed journals. The post holder must be able to travel within the UK and to India for project meetings.
What we can offer you:
We offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme and 30 days annual leave with a further 10.5 Public/Privilege days. Opportunities for further training and development are supported.
