Postdoctoral Researcher in Climate-Ice Sheet Modeling

The Climate and Global Dynamics Division (CGD) with the NCAR Earth
System Laboratory (NESL) at the National Center for Atmospheric Research
(NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, seeks an individual to conduct
collaborative and independent research as a member of a project team
modeling the long-term changes in climate, ice sheets, and sea level
using the Community Earth System Model with the Community Ice Sheet
Model (CESM-CISM). Simulations will include both past and future
scenarios. The position will combine scientific research with the
coordination and support of the CESM-CISM simulation activities. This
position participates and contributes to the CESM-CISM modeling
activities, specifically critically evaluating the simulations for the
Last Interglacial and Pliocene against reconstructions for the climate,
sea level, and the Greenland ice sheet, independently and in
collaboration with others, and using these simulations in conjunction
with long-term future CESM-CISM simulations to understand possibilities
for the future. The incumbent will interact with the greater CESM and
university communities, providing expertise on ice dynamics and the
capabilities of CESM-CISM for paleoclimate problems, and will be
involved in suggesting improvements to CISM and the other component
models for successful prediction of the Greenland ice sheet within CESM.
The position includes the design and execution of experiments, the
scientific analysis of results, further development of tools too assess
the results, and the publication of papers.

Requirements include: (1) a Ph.D. or equivalent in oceanic, atmospheric,
or related earth sciences within the last 5 years; (2) understanding,
through published or academic work, of modeling complex, geophysical
processes and a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical
basis of ice sheet models; (3) extensive experience with ice sheet
models and detailed knowledge of data analysis methodologies for climate
and ice sheet models; and (4) a record of publication in scientific
peer-reviewed journals.

A detailed job description can be viewed at
<https://ucarcareers.silkroad.com/>. Initial consideration will be given
to applications received prior to 10/24/2014. Thereafter, applications
will be reviewed on an as-needed basis. Apply online (reference tracking
code #14178). We value diversity. AA/EOE

POSTDOCTORAL position in ocean modeling available

LOCEAN-IPSL, UPMC

The LOCEAN Laboratory, University Pierre and Marie Curie, Paris, seeks
applicants for a postdoctoral position in tropical ocean modeling. A
Ph.D. in oceanography is required, as well as a strong research
experience in running an OGCM. We encourage applications from
researchers interested in improving simulation of upper tropical ocean
stratification and circulation, and in understanding physics of tropical
eastern basin upwellings and their interactions with the atmosphere.

The researcher will help conduct a modeling effort directed at improving
the realism of the OGCM simulations within the regions of the eastern
tropical Atlantic basin characterized by warm biases. A regional set up
of the NEMO OGCM will mainly be used and further developed to
investigate hypotheses associated with the warm bias problem.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with colleagues from
LOCEAN and IPSL working on the topic, and with the international team of
the EU FP7 Project ? PREFACE ? focusing on the issue.

The framework of research is particularly rich and favorable, thanks to
an exceptional ensemble of complementary models, configurations,
observations, tools and methodologies, currently used for studying the
eastern basin biases, at IPSL and within PREFACE.

This position is for two years and is open until fulfilled. A response
before October 22d, 2014 would be appreciated.

Please send an application with a statement of research interests,
curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional
references to Dr. Alban Lazar (alban.lazar@upmc.fr
<mailto:alban.lazar@upmc.fr>) and contact him directly with any
inquiries about the position.

Hi,
The UCLA Dept. of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the University of
Washington School of Oceanography have received a 5-year NSF Collaborative
Research award for assessment of the future evolution of the four Eastern
Boundary Upwelling Systems, including the U.S. West Coast. This project aims
to provide a comprehensive understanding of the consequences of climate
change and its interplay with decadal variability over the coming decades in
coastal upwelling systems. As described in the enclosed PDF, UCLA and UW seek two
postdoctoral scholars to work on this project, one based at UCLA and one based
at UW.

The Centre for Environment and Marine Research of the University of Aveiro (Portugal) (http://www.cesam.ua.pt/) will soon need one research assistant with sound experience in programming in numerical modeling of the atmosphere, in particular with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The objective is to improve model performance by adapting the various parametrization schemes of WRF to particular regional conditions. The candidate should have a strong background in atmospheric physics and programming in Fortran. The contract is expected to start in early 2015, for one year, renewable for a maximum of five years. Gross salary ~ 50k?/year. For further inquiries and manifestation of interest, please contact Prof. Alfredo Rocha (alfredo.rocha@ua.pt<mailto:alfredo.rocha@ua.pt>). This manifestation of interest does not constitute an application at this sage.
